If you brush that aside, this was a comic book romance. While the sex was explicit, there wasn't much of it, and when it was introduced, it went on for way too long given how unimaginative it was. The comic book feel was clearly intentional, since the Batman/Alfred comparison was put directly into the text by the author. And that's not a bad place for a book to be - hey, I watch Arrow - but the action side of the story was fairly weakly constructed. The mafia underworld was hard to understand (maybe because I did not read the first book because the title says its a standalone). Motivations were weak. I felt really bad for Dimitri when John Paul finally laid his cards on the table - it completely destroyed his credibility as a character.
Which now brings me to the egregious failings of this book. HUGE continuity issues on just about everything. Ava was taken near her birthday, which is in August, but she is very cold as she is shipped to Puerto Rico, in an enclosed container with no air and 50 other women who have no room. Yup sure. I could go on, but that would not be helpful.
Was it worth $.99 - I've read better $.99 reads.
Ava’s world changed forever the day she met her step-father John Paul. He loved her with an unrelenting and fierce love when she craved it more than anything. He turned her world upside down and showed her what a parent was supposed to be. She loved him more the life itself, but John Paul has many secrets. Secrets that could turn her life upside down and inside out. Can the power that John Paul wields be able to protect his precious Ava before one of his secrets steals more than he is prepared to give up?
I couldn’t get over just how remarkable the characters in this story are. Each and every one of them have such a huge depth and breathe to them. They are utterly fascinating and wondrously extraordinary. I lost my heart to Dimitri and Ava, and I don’t want it back. Their journey was stunning and brilliant! This story is one that will haunt you long after it is over. You won’t want it to end, and I can’t wait to read more from these absolutely enthralling characters.
This is the first book I read by Airicka Phoenix, and I am completely blown away. She stole my heart irrevocably, and I willingly give her my reading devotion as well. She is a true master at creating such a vividly heart-wrenching world that will turn your life upside down. You won’t be able to look at anything the same way ever again. You will see so much more, feel even the slightest of emotions, and have a much more sensitive view of our world. You don’t want to miss out on this wonderful masterpiece!
Our MCs have known each other for most of their lives, but it comes in remembrances and recollections as they continue to do their own story in the present. I think one of the best things about this was how there were so many stories linking all together to make up one big masterpiece for me. It kept me in suspense. I enjoyed the characters and the different things they brought to the table, particularly Ava's best friend, Robby. Despite not always being in the picture, his character went through some major transformations, and I absolutely love it.
I love Phoenix's writing and although it's been a while since I've read her books, I'm definitely going to start up again. She managed to meld so many things together and make it work: crime/gang life, romance, sexy times, comedy and even tragedy. If I could give this a higher rating, I would.
Definitely not a book to treat like a fast read, it's got a whole lot of entertainment that'll make you laugh out loud and cry (at least it did for me).
