This particular novel has some dark features as the bad guys are really, really bad. There is much rape, mutilation, and terror. The hero, Jordan Gray, is somewhat different from most of West's main characters. He's naive and not as well-toned for Western battle as are the Culver brothers in previous novels. He makes mistakes, get shot up, and more or less bumbles his way to achieving his vengeful goal.
West's ability to pace his novels by injecting twists and turns as well as introducing colorful bad guys, makes for unstoppable reading. Reading his books is like watching an old movie on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
who killed his wife and son. Gray's experiences in tracking these killers bring exciting reading to the lover of western novels.
I would recommend this novel to all of those who like to "relive" the early west through good writing.
