Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you don't mind the DARK AND EDGY reads, and you enjoyed the books like Dark Duet or Tears of Tess, you will find The Devil's Kiss a most satisfying read." -- My Journeys Into Pure Imagination

"Gemma warns us...this ain't your Mama's Romance. It is intense, dark, gritty and ... Awesome!" -- SnifferWalkBooks

"THE DEVIL'S KISS will light you on fire! I'm still not sure if it is from the searing pain his sadistic side relishes in dishing out or the scorching hot sex he was so obviously born to engage in." -- Bookie Nookie Reviews

About the Author

Gemma James is a USA Today and Amazon bestselling author of a blend of genres, from new adult suspense to dark erotic romance. She loves to explore the darker side of human nature in her fiction, and she's morbidly curious about anything dark and edgy, from deviant sex to serial killers. Readers have described her stories as being "not for the faint of heart."

She warns you to heed their words! Her playground isn't full of rainbows and kittens, though she likes both. She lives in Oregon with her husband and their four children--three rambunctious UFC/wrestling-loving boys and one girl who steals everyone's attention.

I’ve been sitting here for quite some time wondering what to say about this book. Good? Bad? Hmmmmm still……words aren’t coming. Let me start with the synopsis.

Characters are:

Kayla who works at Channing Enterprises.

Rick, Kayla’s ex-husband.

Eve, Kayla & Rick’s 3-year old daughter.

Gabe Channing, boss & owner of Channing Enterprises.

Ian, Kayla’s true love even after 7 years, there is still powerful love there.

Jody, Kayla’s friend and the person who recommended her for the job.

The book begins very strong, diving right into the story, which I appreciate. Kayla has stolen money from Gage and he has come up with what seems like it could be very…..satisfying for them both. Of course she is reluctant and I can understand why. Unless she agrees to be his slave (in the worst manner) he will report her to the police. This really isn’t a choice since she has a restraining order on her ex, Rick, for almost killing her and her daughter is in the hospital fighting cancer. Her daughter’s cancer being the reason for taking the money in the first place. She is in a no win situation and he knows it. Gage exploits her, manuliplates her and blackmails her constantly through the majority of this book.

I have never wanted to hop in a book and slap the shit out of a character so badly. Gage is mean. Just plain mean. He uses severe BDSM punishments for the slightest things right from the beginning. Within minutes of arriving he has her gagged & strung up to her toes and left for an hour. That same weekend he brutally whips her and gives her 50 awful spankings. He makes her clean his bathrooms with a toothbrush (naked with a butt plug in) and he doesn’t do any after-care for her at all.

Title: The Devil's Kiss
Series: The Devil's Kiss
Designation: Book One of Serial, Not A Standalone, Contains Cliffhanger
Author: Gemma James
My Rating: FIVE SINFULLY WICKED STARS *****
***Content Warning: I would like to preface my review by saying, if you have sexual triggers and object to explicit adult content and disturbing subject matter including bondage, domination, sadism, masochism, extreme acts of punishment, nonconsensual sex and rape, this is probably NOT the book for you. However, although the author does give the reader a very realistic accounting of the subject matter, it's written tactfully and skillfully. Make no mistake, this is a deliciously dark and sinfully wicked erotic romance with elements of suspense and multiple plot twists that will both shock and surprise you. And I loved every single minute. Also, please be aware, this is a two hundred page novel that is the first book of a serial. It is not a standalone read and does end in a cliffhanger.

Okay, I admit, I was somewhat undecided about the rating for this book. No, I was actually conflicted over the entire series which to date, consists of three books, The Devil's Kiss(Book One), The Devil's Claim(Book Two) and The Devil's Wife(Book Three). Having never read anything written by Gemma James, I had no idea what to expect but I'm a real sucker for a freebie. I'm a voracious reader and there's nothing I enjoy more than discovering a great new author so after reading the blurb and the free sample, I was intrigued and decided since the book was offered as a free download by Amazon, I would give it a whirl. And I'm really glad I did.

This book made me uncomfortable all of the way through. The darkness in it did not have enough light to balance out the book. The female character had no real choice in her blackmailed role and the male character had nothing to redeem his dark side, especially no compassion. This book left me cold.

Part one was intense. I find the story demeaning to women. I usually enjoy master and dominance stories but this Gage character is not the type of man I appeal to. I'm not a fan of men breaking women just for their own selfish sexual needs. I cringe every time Gage pushes Kayla with some form of punishment. I'm sick of men and their authority of power. Even the story line is not appealing. Desperate woman willing to steal and sale her soul to the devil is not attractive. Kayla's character tries to come across as strong and defiant but all she does is complain and beg for him to stop. I realize this is not suitable for me. It does offend me.
Part two is already grating on my nerves. Now it seems Kayla misses the mistreatment by Gage since with it he brought great pleasure with that pain. It's especially not appealing when a man demands a woman to fix her body in a way that appeals to him. It's her body. I am absolutely repulsed by Gage's ability to manipulate Kayla into believing he cares for her needs.
Part three is full of excuses. Kayla has not demonstrated any clarity as to why this situation is still ongoing. The demands and threats are questionable at this stage. It's one compounded corruption after another. Finally answers to how all this drama began. Crazy concept.
