I own 11-12 novels by this author and this one had more than it's share of sadness and tragedy. Our couple are apart a lot during this story. It tugged at my heart what the H assumes he knows what happened to the h after their kiss.
Need I say, not all is as it seems to be and that is where we get on the road to heartache in spades.
They both felt a connection almost immediately but life got in their ways and 5 years pass. I was disappointed the h didn't ask the H why he married so quickly. The choices these two made put them on the road to a sad and bumpy HEA.
There is a nasty villain, and he is such a mean spirited person. There is 1 lightly described foreplay and lovemaking within marriage rated 2 out of 5 heat level.
There is cheating, but not by our H/h and described after the fact, no cliffhanger, interesting secondary character's that I can't wait for their story to be told. Very little on romance though, so if your looking for sunshine and roses on their way to HEA, you will not get it.
We have deaths that will shake the lives of our couple. I do recommend this story and enjoy this writer's style. This has more sorrow, than I am use to from this author. Be prepared to use a lot of your emotions. I also, enjoyed that the secret made for an interesting journey.
I can't improve on the blurb, so will let it speak for what you will get out of this story. (ljb)

If you can't reflect the morals and values and behaviors of a historical period stop writing in that era! Read Jane Austin. Set the story in 1906 instead of 1806 and it would be slightly more believable.

To sad and heartbreaking for me even though it has HEA ,it takes a long time with misunderstanding through out most of the story.I read the prologue to the next story and it seems equally sad and heartbreaking ,I don't think I'll attempt it.

I don't mind a little angst in my reading, but when a book is just one long dreary situation after another, it wears on my soul. There should be at least a little lightness, a little comic relief, a little sparkle in each story. In this tale of woe, our hero and our heroine meet and there is instant attraction. They make plans to see each other the next day, but alas and alack, the hero's father dies that very night and, *gasp* the heroine's mother is killed in a carriage accident that evening, too. The accident leaves her with a broken leg and her father is totally paralyzed. Needless to say, the meeting of the two main characters does not happen and so the story drones on. Honestly, the whole time that I was reading I kept thinking of some of the early silent movies where the poor heroine endures many tragedies and a dastardly villain to reach her HEA. (Yep, dastardly villain included in plot line!) I didn't find myself all that interested in the characters or the plot line. It was "just okay" but does not make me want to read more in the series.
For those interested: Explicit sex does not occur until approximately 90% and it occurs after marriage.

After having thoroughly enjoyed the many medieval novels by Alexa Aston, I am delighted that she has written a new series set during a later historical period. Regency stories are another favorite of mine, and this talented author makes the era come alive with convincing events and a cast of memorable characters. DEVOTED TO THE DUKE introduces the St. Clair siblings, and this book tells about the oldest brother who is trying to make his family name once again be respected. A twist of fate took away the only woman with whom he wanted to spend his life, and when they are given a second chance, many hurdles still stand in their way. I was totally captivated by all the imaginative developments taking place throughout the book, and I never knew in what direction the storyline would go, thus keeping me reading without stopping. Alexa Aston has concocted a truly outstanding historical romance, one filled with creativity on every page.
When the time has come for Lady Catherine Crawford to enjoy her first Season, she really wants to find a man who will declare his love, not just give her a title and the status that comes with it. Even though she has received several offers of marriage, none of the gentlemen have her desiring them in any way. At the latest ball, a man named Jeremy St. Clair is in attendance, and there is an immediate connection between them. Though plans are made to visit with one another the next day, circumstances keep the two apart and years pass by. When Catherine and Jeremy see each other again, they both need to marry, but now a terrible fact has been revealed which may still keep them from ever being together.
From the instant I met Catherine and Jeremy, I knew they were going to be special people, and their love story is one that I will long remember. While looks may have first drawn them together, it is their personalities which captured their hearts and my own. I found Jeremy to be not only caring but also intelligent. He is responsible when it comes to family, too. Catherine proves her devotion to others when the need arises, and I admired her for being so unselfish.
Any details in the story seem very accurate, while individuals come across as believable and their behavior is definitely distinctive. There are so many wonderful secondary characters, and two of them get their own book next. I cannot wait, especially after reading the excerpt at the end of this installment.

Alexa Aston has written a wonderful first book in a new series! I couldn't put it down as I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. There were so many interesting twists and turns, and angst for the main characters. Jeremy St. Clair, Marquess of Sather met Lady Catherine Crawford the night he returned from his Grand Tour at a ball. Jeremy had no desire for marriage, but one magical kiss with Lady Catherine changed his life forever. The night of the ball also changed both of Jeremy and Catherine's lives in other ways. Jeremy's father died, making him the Duke of Everton. Lady Catherine and her parents were in a carriage accident on their way home. Her mother was killed and Catherine and her father were injured. Rather than give away too many details of this gem, I encourage you to read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

An emotional whirlwind of heartache and joy!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 30, 2019Verified Purchase
I was so invested in and connected to the characters that I read most of this through tear filled eyes and watery smiles. I couldn't help but live through each traumatic event, misunderstanding and gut-wrenching heartache, as Catherine and Jeremy suffer through a seemingly neverending stream of badluck and mistiming. Extremely entrancing and entincingly engaging story where moments of wit and sparks of happiness seem all the more potent.
A great debut into this time period for Aston and a wonderfully compelling start to what seems to be a well thoughtout and emotionally ensnaring series that holds no punches as it unashamedly pulls at your heart strings and melts your heart in equal measure.

A Ball, Trouble and Afterwards
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2020Verified Purchase
Jeremy St Clair had just returned from travelling on the continent, when his father , the Duke of Everton tells him to enjoy the Balls instead of looking at the estate's records. At one ball, Jeremy meets Lady Catherine Crawford, where they recognise that they are meant to be together.
However, plans don't work out. Jeremy gets home, only to see his father collapse on his return from an evening out, while Catherine's family are involved in a carriage accident on their way home.
Jeremy's marriage to a young, shy, wealthy woman, Mary, who gave until a daughter. Catherine cares for her badly injured father for several years. Add a nasty, unpleasant cousin with his own agenda and powerful friends who help bring the couple together, inspite of threats before all ends well.

Most romantic novel I have ever read!

London's Season. Aristocrats present their offspring to the other titled and wealthy folk. Eyes of a young woman and a young man meet "across a crowded room". She is determined on a love match and he was determined not to marry, ever. But the attraction is so strong he changes his mind.
This well written book contains tragedy, bravery, heartbreak, kindness, and more. Best of all I liked the characters (and boo, hiss to the hateful ones).
strongly recommend
