Each of the 100 stories are illustrated, have a key verse, a short prayer, and a song that goes with that lesson. The short stories have stories from the Bible or the author's childhood. All the stories intertwine Biblical principles in them with application for today. One story teaches when to dial 911 (for those who live in areas that use that service.)
The songs are clearly marked on the devotional page. So, you will know which CD and which song number goes with that story. Some of the songs are classic songs such as "Now the Day is Over," others are newer upbeat songs such as the one that goes with the title of this review. The songs have children's voices singing with some adults. The CDs are over an hour long each. The book includes a link to a Web site that has the lyrics of the songs.
Two things to note: 1) One of the songs about Noah's ark seemed to be more interested in teaching counting than staying with the Biblical account of the story. 2) Except for the cover of the book, most of the illustrations are of Caucasians. One ironic example is the devotion that includes the song, "Jesus Loves All the Children of the World."
This book would be great for a short devotional bedtime story with parental involvement for young children or for long car rides for children who are old enough to read on their own.
Disclaimer: I received this book to review from BookSneeze. The views are mine.
There are 100 short devotions for children. Each devotion has a corresponding hymn or Bible song (on 2 CD's) to reinforce the message of the devotion. Also, each devotion comes with a memory verse.
We are using this as a devotional before we get our school day started. However, instead of reading a new devotion each day, we take the idea of one devotion and spread through our school week. The devotions themselves are relatively short and I really want to make sure my children are grasping God's Word before we move on to the next topic. So, I post that devotion's memory verse up on the wall for my children to learn through out the week. One day we read the devotion, the next day we review the memory verse and listen to the corresponding song. On other days, we read Scripture passages that compliment the devotion. This just reinforces the main idea and helps it to stick, so to speak.
While this book does not delve into the Word of God as much as I'd hoped, it has been good to use as a guide for our daily devotional/Bible time. It's given me some structure on what we'll cover each day. My children also like the pictures and love to listen to the Bible songs. I would recommend this to use alone for daily family devotions with younger children (2-5yrs) or as a guide for family devotions for older children (6-9yrs). Either way, it's been a blessing to our family.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review blogger's program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission.
Each of the devotionals has a "Word Watch," or memory verse as well as a thought and a short prayer. The Word Watch verses are just the right length for kids to be able to remember. The pictures are colorful and cheerful. My kids really love this book and get really excited about reading it each night.
The CDs that come with the book are full of songs that my kids love.Read more ›
