As much of a Kinky Shine fan as she is, twenty-three-year-old music blogger Harley Floyd can't excuse the jerky behavior of the band's twenty-five-year-old frontman, Dex Bowers. He may be a tatted up, gorgeous rock god who backs up the outer image with a wicked talent for songwriting and singing, but accusing your band's manager's daughter that she must have slept her way to score an interview with him before you realize who she was goes in the history books as dumbest move ever. But embarrassment isn't the only thing that Dex finds himself feeling in Harley's presence. For the first time in what feels like forever, he's drawn to a woman and it doesn't look like the feeling is going away any time soon. On Harley's end, her irritation and anger are soon replaced by attraction towards Dex. Yes, he's still moody and seems to be have a difficult time trusting anyone outside of his three other band mates and his manager, but there's something more to him, something that makes Harley want to be there to listen and understand what he has been and is going through. While Harley may get Dex's writer's block when it comes to composing new material for the album, he doubts she'll get his self-inflicted cock-blocking issue.
This book is about 235 or so pages long--which I consider good for a full-length novel--allowing it to be long enough to to give readers a complete and well-told story without ever making it feel overwhelming or overdone. I wasn't merely entertained by Dex and Harley's love story; I was all in with these two and then found myself becoming invested in the three other members of Kinky Shine: Maxen Walton (the band's drummer and Dex's best friend since high school) and Otis Patel and Beckett Kline (the band's bassist and guitarist, respectively, and Dex and Maxen's closest friend whom they met in college). Just like Dex, there's more the the rest of Kinky Shine than meets the eye, and I, for one, will not be missing out on the opportunity to getting to know them better and discovering what secrets they may be keeping from us (and maybe even each other). I also hope that Delaney (Harley's best friend and roommate in New York) does decide to move to Los Angeles and that she gets her own story as well. Suffice it to say that I anticipate loving each of the books to come and that I'm already a confirmed Kinky Shine fangirl. This may have been my first Stephanie Witter read but you can bet it won't be the last. I'm giving Dex five-plus stars. ♥
When you finish a book and actually have to email the author personally to THANK HER for creating such an awesome book - you know it's serious.
This book floored me. There was something about it that completely enraptured me and made me get the "feels" all over!!!
This is not your typical rock star romance at all. There was no crazy drama…no thirsty groupies causing problems…no crazy ex’s that pop up out of the woodwork. None.
Kinky Shine consists of the following band mates – Dex, Maxen, Otis & Beckett.
Kinky Shine is managed by David Floyd. David has called up on his daughter, Harley, to help the image of the band with the public.
Harley & Dex’s first meeting does not go well at all. It was like watching a train wreck happen in slow motion.
But from there, it all starts to fall into place- albeit without its ups and downs.
You can’t help but fall hopelessly in love with our H and h.
Dex’s story will blow your mind. Threw me for a total loop! But Harley’s persistence to help him will make your heart melt and set your underwear on fire!!!
There is nothing about this story that I didn’t like (shockingly). I am SO looking forward to the rest of this series because the other guys in the band leave their own imprint on you, full of curiosity and wondering what their background stories were and who was going to help them.
So, with that (sorry I didn’t go too in-depth with the review), believe me when I say – READ IT!!!!
Thank you, Stephanie!!!!!
Highly recommend reading this story.
Harley, a successful music blogger and social media expert, is enlisted by her father who is the manager of Kinky Shine to put the band on the social media map. Right away, she is put off by the arrogant, obnoxious vocalist/guitarist Dex who offends her by suggesting she slept her way into an interview with him. Once Dex finds out who she is, he is properly aghast and remorseful enough that he emerges as not only a colorful character but a likeable one. As the chapters go by, more is revealed about Dex, further endearing him. After the initial disastrous meeting, Dex and Harley find an instant unexplained attraction to each other. They are both cautious, each for their own reasons, exploring this crush cautiously, taking their relationship slow. As their friendship blossoms into more, a secret comes to light within the band. The band members have always been as tight as brothers and have welcomed Harley into their fold, but she worries this secret could be the undoing of her closeness with them and break the bond of trust between her and Dex. Even worse, the fate and fame of Kinky Shine could be threatened.
Dex ends as a HEA but only after pulling the reader into a darker world of rock, paparazzi, and drugs than shows on the surface, yet in an extremely sweet and lighthearted way. I loved this one and will be recommending it!
