We got ours from a restaurant that was closing 3 years ago, so it came to us after heavy use. We have had it professionally sharpened a few times, but only because we were getting the rest of our knives honed (it costs a few bucks at your local kitchen store and it's definitely worth it for your chefs knives).
The only disadvantages for home use are that the handles are not as attractive (though they are both more comfortable and more sanitary) as the riveted scales normally found on household knives, the steel is less rust-resistant (but otherwise better), and they are not as attractively packaged for gift-giving.
This particular version is not just the best thing since sliced bread; it is the slicer itself! It has that rarely-encountered and very satisfying feel of pulling itself into the bread or meat with no downward pressure at all. Superb.
