Daniel/Murijah... Ah, what to say about him? I fell for his character. Of course he's dark, mysterious, handsome -- and at times infuriating. Which makes him all the more attractive, of course. But the real draw is his complexity, intelligence, and the passion that he once indulged and now desperately wants to escape, as it threatens to collapse all that he has worked to build within himself. He's a man torn between his spiritual and his human nature, and watching him struggle with this conflict was my favorite part about this story. It's the meat, the choice between Dharma and Desire.
Penny is also a wonderfully complex character. As the star of her fiance's jazz club, she's successful on the surface, but underneath she's longing for a life far more fulfilling and is still haunted by a deep loss during her time in the Korean war. The image she has built at the club is an illusion covering her true desires -- and a prophecy, and Daniel, threaten to tear the illusion wide open.
For all the seriousness of this story, there are many times I laughed watching Penny and Daniel butt heads, so it's well-balanced. The scenes with tension and sexuality are beautifully written, and there's even a little hint to a dynamic of domination and submission that adds to the intrigue. And although much of the story is based around Eastern spiritual concepts, you don't need background knowledge. It's explained through the story.
This is a well-written, well-edited (worth noting, since not all self-published works are), thought-provoking, sensual, and compelling story that will be on your mind long after you're finished. I highly recommend it.
The love story was unique and realistic. It felt true to the time period. It had me laughing and crying.
I would recommend this book to anyone!
