If you take a HARD look at it; our lifestyles DO NOT have the right NUTRIENTS (I'm not talking about the FOOD we eat per se, here, I'm talking about RAW nutrients (minerals, vitamins, co enzymes, etc) our bodies MUST have to prevent disease and maintain health. Suzy uses this book to RE-introduce concepts that incorporate NUTRIENTS into our lives that can PREVENT further damage and disease. It's not JUST about eating right; it's about getting the "right" (least harmful) medicines, and adding supplements that will support out health.
My brother is diabetic; as a result of one of his "meds", he was diagnosed with cancer. The surgeon even told him which drug it was. Too bad conventional medicine practitioners don't seem to understand which minerals might have been used as a supplement to prevent or obviate the diabetes and cancer.
Suzy has many things to say about all this as a pharmacist--I suggest you read this book and see where she's coming from.
The reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 stars is that I think while being helpful, the guidelines and suggestions on what to eat are out of reach for most folks. We simply don't have the time or the money to follow them. For example, I understand that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is bad, and she talks about this in the book. My favorite tomato soup has a lot of HFCS in it but it's also under $1 per can. So I bought a different type of tomato soup with no HFCS and it was well over $2 for a small box. I also don't want to spend a majority of my time cooking from scratch.
She also recommends eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds and little meat. My body cannot handle this kind of diet very well. I have tried eating little to no meat, and I don't feel well. (sorry, vegans). I believe that everyone has their own biochemistry and there is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to diet.
Having said that, I would recommend this book. The author goes in depth into the facets of diabetes, from how it works in the body and how modern medicine tries to treat it, to various vitamins, minerals and herbs that can be used to help the body get it's groove back, so to speak. I plan to try a couple of the supplements suggested here as Type 2 diabetes runs in my family.
Finally, the book provided excellent materials and resources to reverse type 2 diabetes naturally. However, it's up to you to do it or not. Don't feel uncomfortable with her rants. Straight talks won't hurt you, but those sweet things, feel-good things. Her thoughts just want you to make the better choice for your health.
