Editorial Reviews

Two women one plan. We'll poison the creep who treats us like dirt they agree. We'll dump the body in a murky pool and someone will find a surprise at the bottom. There's a surprise all right. When the pool is drained and cleaned no body is found. Sharon Stone and Isabelle Adjani pour on the femme and the fatale in a diabolical grabber of a suspense thriller directed by Jeremiah Chechik (Benny and Joon) and based in part on the classic 1955 French spellbinder Les Diaboliques. Will the women get away with bloody murder? Has someone removed the body of the victim (Chazz Palminteri) and begun playing mind games with them? Add to the mix a tough cookie of a detective (Kathy Bates) and you've got theingredients for "a nail-biter from the first scene to the last" (Bob Polunsky KENS-TV/San Antonio).Running Time: 107 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA UPC: 085391420422

Despite criticism that the film is monotonous and boring, I rented the video and was pleasantly surprised. Sharon Stone seems to be getting better every film she does. The chemistry between Stone and Isabelle Adjani is great. Chaz Palminteri is the perfect bad guy and Kathy Bates was a great detective. Listen close, Bates has some of the best lines. I really enjoyed my first viewing. I liked it enough to watch a second and third time!! Big thumbs up to the entire cast for a job well done. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

This movie totally rocked! I rented it while I was in Florida on vacation. I thought it was very well laid out and acted. I usually don't like Sharon Stone, but in this movie she was great. She and Kathy Bates had the best lines. And her wardrobe was totally to die for. Everything I read about this movie said it sucked, but I think the stupid critics who were supposed to be watching this movie were actually sleeping! I liked it so much I ordered my own copy of it. Diabolique is a definite must-rent, folks!

Henri-Georges Clouzot's "Les Diaboliques" -- or just "Diabolique" to American viewers -- is a classic suspense movie on par with Hitchcock. It's a gritty, haunting story with an astounding twist at the end.

So how did Hollywood ruin the remake? Well, they decided to "Basic Instinct" it. In other words, they decided to remake it as yet another 1990s erotic thriller, and even cast Sharon Stone in one of the central roles. But the most unforgivable aspect of "Diabolique" is the drastic changes to the central plot -- which render most of the plot twists illogical and predictable.

Vicious Guy Baran (Chazz Palminteri) runs a boarding school for boys, but the school is actually owned by his frail, pious wife Mia (Isabel Adjani). Since he believes she will never divorce him, he has an open affair with one of the teachers, Nicole (Stone). He doesn't realize that the two women are secretly conspiring to kill him, and that Nicole has concocted a foolproof plan.

So using the threat of a divorce, they lure him to a distant apartment owned by Nicole, drug him, and drown him in the bathtub. When they return to the school, they immediately sink him in a disgusting algae-filled swimming pool, having given themselves a pretty decent alibi. But when the pool is drained, the corpse is missing -- and someone sends pictures to Mia indicating that they were seen.

It's almost painful watching "Diabolique" at times, since it's a perfect example of how most Hollywood remakes turn out -- crass attempts to "modernize" timeless material, with lackluster directors and actors attaching themselves to it. It's pretty much impossible to not compare the remake to Clouzot's original, and find it lacking in every way.

It also has the pacing of a wet sandbag -- director Jeremiah S.

If you're a fan of Sharon Stone movies from the 90's you'll appreciate this movie. I hated the original French version. Now that one was slow and it didn't have the awesome girl on girl innuendo this version does. This movie is silly and smutty, don't take it so seriously.

This movie has decent star power given by famed actress Sharon Stone. This movie has little suspense. I would say what makes it entertaining is the relationship between wife and mistress before and after executing their plan to be rid of the wife's cruel husband, and how the aftermath affects the relationship for both wife and mistress.

I give it 5 stars because I love it, not because it's some great powerhouse addition to cinema history in story, but because the principals in this film are fantastic. So well-casted. Kathy Bates plays her part to perfection. Except for her performance in Casino, Sharon Stone couldn't be better. And the rest are pitch perfect. The plot has twists and turns. I have not seen the first version, so I don't compare, just appreciating this version on its own. The setting, cinematography and wardrobe in this film are all great; this is a very well coordinated film and speaks to the power of unappreciated women, mental illness, anger with revenge, and sex triangles.

Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1955 thriller remains essential cinema, but the 1996 remake is a complete waste of time. Sharon Stone, Isabelle Adjani and Chazz Palminteri try their best in a hopeless situation. Director Jeremiah S. Chechik also was responsible for the 1998 "Avengers" fiasco. A Hollywood motto: "If it ain't broke . . . break it!"
