Editorial Reviews

Review

“This important new book on design and leadership is entertaining, informative, and valuable as we think about ways to design a better future. It adds wisdom to the design professions and communities they serve.”

— James P. Cramer

Chairman and CEO, the Greenway Group &

Chairman, the Design Futures Council

“Life lessons in design are hard to come by; insights from iconic practitioners are even harder to find. A wonderful compendium of conversations, interviews and stories shedding light on our career choices. A great read.”

—Clement Mok

The Office of Clement Mok,
Ex-Officio President, AIGA, The Professional Association for Design

“I look for the word inform in any information I observe, and… for the word quest in any question that is asked. I pursue the quest to be informed or the informed quest. Perhaps it’s… the collected passion of the wonderful conversations in this book that search for making the complex clear and allow us to find meaning in our questions that allow others to be informed.”

David Calvin Laufer's Dialogues with Creative Legends is a welcome and highly readable book on the most important aspect of design- the thinking stage. Laufer's writing style puts the student or professional designer in the room with each giant of the mid-twentieth century, including two I have studied with and written about, Victor J. Papanek and R. Buckminster Fuller. Laufer's book should be required reading for students in every area of design from architecture to animation.

I am still reading this book, but it is clearly exceptional from the standpoint of someone like myself who is a designer.
I went to college with the author and I wish I had hung out with him more - he gained insight and wisdom much faster than I did!

As a young design professional, this book has given me hope. Detailed anecdotes that one hopes to discover from a series of chats with a design master can be accessed at your own convenience, and digested at your own pace. The book can be read sequentially, but my short millennial attention span likes the fact that it also works out of order, without getting disconnected. Although the setting took place in a different time and place, this book has helped me navigate many challenging social and professional situations that I face today. Not to mention it is witty and interesting. I recommend this valuable piece of work to anyone who is searching for design career wisdom and inadvertently, a crash course of design allusions.

I found out about this book while attending a lecture given by the author at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) and immediately purchased a copy that has been a great inspiration to me. I was intrigued by the author's commitment to seeking out design greats and learning directly from them through conversation and debate. This book records those interactions and makes the wisdom that the author gained accessible to all who read it—the dialogues recorded are like TED talks from a time before there were TED talks. If you love design and want to learn from insights shared by the profession's greats, this book will make you happy!

What a total delight and privilege it was to read this book! It is every designer's dream to have conversations with design luminaries - those who have passed into the great design firms in the sky and those very much alive and well-- ( that perfect dinner party, perhaps?!) and this very able author has assembled just such an impressive group. Written with a true designer's soul and kindred spirit, every page offers insight into the impressive array of enormously influential creative leaders' experiences and innovative thought processes. A must-read for emerging designers, established professionals and those curious about the great minds behind the work that has helped form our visual culture!

This is one of those books that I go back to often. As a photographer who has worked with and talked about Designer legends over years, it is a pleasure to have an insider's look at the greats. Both young and old can learn a great deal from these insightful conversations and observations. Fans of, and members of AIGA should be reading and sharing this treasure. I recommend this book highly!
Thanks David!

The book 'AHA moments in a designer's career' is based on an enormous respect for high quality design. The unique interactions with creative leaders over time, show the personal admiration of the writer, who is somewhat driven to become one of them. People who had a creative career themselves will recognize their own aspirations, but for starting designers this book shows how impactful conversations with creative experts can be. Even though design circumstances and technologies are different now, the book reiterates that 'Good Work' relates to a purpose and is not about just doing your job.
