Jorge Agustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana y Borrás (but known as “George Santayana”; 1863–1952), was a philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist. His most famous book is The Life of Reason---which includes Reason in Common Sense, Reason in Society, Reason in Religion, Reason in Art, and Reason in Science. He also wrote The Sense of Beauty: Being the Outline of Aesthetic Theory.

He wrote in the Preface to the new and enlarged edition of this book, “The impulse to compose these Dialogues with the immortal dead came to me when I was digesting my first feast of Greek philosophy… I imagined myself intruding into the company of those ancient sages, Democritus and Socrates, the heads of all the moderns.
