I like this TRICORDER, and this is why with positive and negatives included:
1. Hey its made of plastic of course no metal parts, painted gray and silver with good weight.
2. I made sure to open all the compartments first when I noticed how difficult it was for my 12yr old, me sweating bullets he would break the compartment hinges. I think you can drop it a few times without too much damage, but the compartment doors could fly off.
1. Since we have created our own props in the past, making lights and switches are always a pain and so discovering all the mechanical and sound features was welcome.
2. The TRICORDER has 3 compartments. First contains all the buttons, screens and lights. Second contains a faux metal grill to left and the psychedelic round window. Third, holds the medical diagnostic do-dad that Bones used, to the right and to the left has access to the battery door sneakily hidden.
3. Strap is faux leather and will last you as long as you don't bend it constantly, I would imagine.
4. Sounds is where this TRICORDER is making you pay the $50. The directions are complete and give an array of sound features that were a pleasant surprise:
a. SCENARIO 1: Open top compartment, push a button, close the top and after 5 seconds it gives a hailing noise, telling you to open it up. Once you open it you get great lines from Spock.
b. SCENARIO 2: While top compartment is open at end of SCENARIO 1, hit button a second time, and close top, after 5 seconds it will start to give 2 second distortion sounds, until you open the top compartment again. Upon which it will give the full distortion sound, where Spock gives two funny lines about getting feedback from some alien, that basically caused his TRICORDER to crash.
c. If you open up the top compartment and hit the correct button (there are 3) you get the EXCELLENT TRICORDER scanning sound, as well as 6 SPOCK lines, which are very technical at times.
d. While the TRICORDER scanning sound is on, and compartment 2 is open, the psychedelic disk/window turns.
5. The third compartment holds the medical analyzer cylinder we are familiar with from BONES scanning his patients or subjects. It has an on and off switch and LED multi-colored light cycle.
PROS: Great sounds and scenarios that are not common in toys. Makes you feel that the TRICORDER actually is working.
The additional medical analyzer is a extra prize, and the weight makes it a good all day costume accessories. I think it would survive a couple of drops and knocks. I think $50 dollars is right for this TRICORDER. Directions are complete, refer to them for operation and make sure to open the battery compartment and set the TRICORDER on Play or you will not be able to enjoy all sounds.
CONS: The lighting for the top compartment screen is not very bright. The medical scanning cylinder belonged to BONES not SPOCK, and both used a TRICORDER. It is sad there are no lines from BONES in the sound library. Strap could break on you if you bend it too much.
Once I actually got it deboxed and played around with it some... well, I was still pretty pleased. It wasn't as spiffy looking as the prototype pictures - one which still graces the product information at the top of the page as I'm writing. The notable differences are that the brushed metal seen in the prototype looks more like silver painted plastic and the screw just above the strap mount is absent. But those features aside, mine appeared and functioned as advertised. The silver paint finish had a few blemish spots, but nothing that I felt critically marred the appearance. Consider that the original props were less than pristine creations and the finish on this version just might be better than the originals in many respects.
I'm doubtful about "the voice of Leonard Nimoy as Spock" in the voice clips. It's possible he's been hugely downsampled and sped up, but to my ear it sounded like someone doing a poor Spock impersonation. But either way it doesn't mean much to me as I'm unlikely to look to the voice clips for entertainment. The basic tricorder scanner whine seemed to work just fine so my inner geek is happy.
The shoulder strap is a thin, low grade (probably faux) leather, but I give them credit for going that far and not just trying to simulate the material with a cheap, flexible plastic. As to the heft of the device, it wasn't as insubstantial as I was expecting from reviews. Consider a tricoder would probably be mostly electronics and plastics. Picked up a console DVD player lately? Not much heft there either.
So my bottom line is that it wasn't as ultra-cool looking as the prototype pics, but it's still pretty neat - especially after waiting so many decades to have one. If you can't accept a few compromises in materials quality and have money to burn, the go for one of those $700 deluxe versions. But to this old Trekkie, if it looks like a tricorder, sounds like a tricorder, and can be carried like a tricorder - well it's good enough for me.
