The fireworks that accompanied the appearance of John Prine's 1971 debut cast a long shadow over its deceptively modest follow-up.Diamonds in the Rough admittedly isn't as laden with contemporary folk standards in the making as its predecessor, but it stands with 1978's Bruised Orange as one of Prine's most unified collections. Working in an acoustic setting, the raw-voiced wordsmith explores a melancholy milieu with "The Torch Singer," "Souvenirs," and "Rocky Mountain Time." "Everybody" recounts a conversation with a down-to-earth Almighty while "Billy the Bum" and "Take the Star Out of the Window" focus respectively on a local character and a weary Vietnam vet. Those are all excellent songs, but Diamonds in the Rough's strength lies less in the tunes themselves than in how sympathetically they're performed and sequenced. --Steven Stolder

Why would I call this one of my favorites albums ever and how the hell did I end up here writing this? Let me start off by saying that I am just a kid of 18.....x2.......+17. Yup just a kid. Still have a huge stack of vinyl and a turntable to play em on. So after all of these years and all of these 8 tracks and all of these cassette tapes and all of these CDs and all of these MP3s the old table does not get used much and the old plates did need that rest. But at least a few times a year, OK, maybe more than a few, one needs a good ol get drunk and howl at the moon alone break. So when the ice cold bottle of Jack comes out of the back of the fridge there stands my old turntable and the platter on the table is still to this day Diamonds in the Rough! Damn. Come to think of it I have been singing the title track in my morning shower for... holly smokes.. 30 some odd years!! You can think up reasons why one song or album might be a favorite but when you look at a piece of your own history and it resides on a real piece of history that you still use regularly!! Yup, must be one of my favorite albums ever and I had no choice but to be here writing this. "Christ I'm so mixed up and lonely, can't even make friends with my brain, I'm too young to be where I'm going, but I'm too old to go back again."

John Prine is one of the great story tellers -- like Woody Guthrie

This was a "reminisce" acquisition; my old album collection had long ago disappeared, and I wanted to visit the (happy) past for a little while. In my opinion, John Prine is one of the great story tellers -- like Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, et al -- of his time. His songs (or stories) are persuasive, deeply appealing to our emotional sides. Diamonds in the Rough was his third 'album' -- has feature hits like Sour Grapes, Billy the Bum, and The Great Compromise. These songs just can't be beat! This is a favorite of my 'albums'. Disc has pretty good sound quality, but even if not, it's not really so much the music (instrumentals) as it is the rhythm/beat and words. Still, fine production. Price, I'll note, is a bit more than what we paid for vinyl back in the 70s! :>)

I sure listen to this album a lot in the mid-70's. In ripping the CD recently, I put all tracks but one to iTunes. Yes, its a bit dark and bittersweet, but it also has some humorous elements (The Frying Pan). Its a darned shame that John Prine never got the popular recognition that he deserved. The fact that David Bromberg contributed to this effort is a huge plus, btw. I don't know how I neglected to replace my vinyl disc and cassette of this fine album!

The CD is fine, I just can not get, or find if I did get, the mp3 files. I listen on the computer most of the time but use the CD in the car. I have checked all the files I know to check (I'm no techno-whiz). Very disappointed to not have the files. Bought four other albums that same night, got all of them in mp3 files, just not this one album. Having to play individual songs off another album on Prime music to hear, which slows down other internet work.
