I first heard off this book on Dollie and ThornDaddy's podcast, Coffee & Submission (which I highly recommend, btw). At the time, I had just gotten out of a bad relationship and was evaluating my life and what direction I wanted to go in. For years, I've suppressed who and what I truly am, and figured that now was the time to do what I wanted to do, for Myself and not anyone else. In deciding on trying out the lifestyle, I decided to start doing research, which led me to the podcast. These two people genuinely love and care for each other, and were doing the things I'd only dreamt of in fantasies I'd kept hidden all my life since I was a young child. They showed me that you could have that deep, meaningful love, and still be accepted for the "darker" parts of oneself. This gave me hope, and when I found out about this book, I decided to buy it.
This book was surprising in its honesty, openess and its genuineness. As these two fell in love with each other, I felt myself falling in love with them, as you would in any well written book. They showed that the stereotypical bdsm couple was anything but. However, as good as their story is, I found a bonus in the information that they provided, that gave insight and helpful tips and hints.
Ultimately, what this book gave me was a good example of what living that life could be, and gave me the courage to go ahead and pursue it. I recommend it for everyone, not just those in the lifestyle or looking to possibly enter it.
Of course, I'm complaining for the very reason you might suspect I am complaining. I wanted this book to be something other than what it is. I am in an "S&M romance" and it is subtly different from other S&M relationships, even long term ones. I was hoping to find common ground with the author but failed to do so because I was so put off by their personalities (Gods...I want to use the word "cutesy" again) as they came across in this book.
Serious topics got hinted at. He was unhappy with her weight so she agreed to lose some. This was especially interesting to me after her plea that any third partners in their bed not be more attractive than she felt herself to be....but we didn't get to eavesdrop on that discussion. Dollie also has a daughter...but while every D/s couple (okay...every hetero D/s couple and many non-hetero D/s couples) has had to discuss the impact of their thinking on their children, we miss that discussion, too, only learning that he moved in when the daughter moved out.
At the same time...these two found each other and dare dream of forever...and that alone is worth two stars. If you still want to read this book, my copy will be at DEAD POET BOOKS in Las Vegas when I get home next spring.
Wow. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who considers themselves open minded. "Diary" will probably broaden your horizons even further. I know it did mine. It is not really what I expected, but I enjoyed it immensely. It reaffirmed my belief that the most critical thing in *any* relationship is open and honest communication.
ThornDaddy & Dollie perform the book brilliantly. I doubt I would have appreciated this novel quite as much if I had purchased it as tree ware. The passion and feeling the authors interject into the podiobook is unbelievable. The love, respect and passion that you can hear in their voices is astounding.
I applaud their bravery. They share many intimate details and 'private' correspondences with us. By doing this, they've enabled us to empathize with them, even those of us who are vanilla or just beginning our exploration of the BDSM world. "Diary of an S+M Romance" gave me new appreciation for "Your Kink Is Not My Kink."
I would not be happy living like they do but that is irrelevant. The important thing is that I respect their right to pursue happiness however they choose to do so. This is America and that's one of the principles we were founded upon. I am thankful that these two have demonstrated to me that there is an infinite number of possibilities in which that is possible. Thank you to both of you!
Diary didn't just stir my loins, it touched my heart, because it's also a genuninely romantic love story. Not some phony cornball romance, but a this-is-what-can-happen-when-two-people-get-completely-honest-and-real-with-each-other love story. What would happen if your lover knew ALL your proclivities? Would he/she run screaming for the hills? Or are you just too chicken to find out? Dollie and her Master/lover take that chance with each other, and the results are so passionate and yes, romantic (that word again), as to be inspiring even to us vanilla wusses.
