The Novelty of Seeing Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams On Screen Together Is Too Irresistible!

A hilariously irreverent take on Watergate through the eyes of teenage girls.

Andrew Fleming’s political teen comedy Dick (1999) is a wonderful film and a clever satire on President Richard Nixon’s administration through the Watergate scandal to Nixon’s resignation. Fleming’s direction is a fast and fun approach to historical American politics in the 1970’s in under 94 minutes. Dick is like Election meets Legally Blonde. It’s a silly movie, but so clever and funny with excellent leading ladies that I think most people would still have a good time with Dick. It’s playful, raunchy, and even informative. Fleming gave us a Halloween classic with The Craft, while Dick is fun for the Summer!

This cast is pretty insane considering the lead actresses are actually my all time favorites: Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams. Kirsten Dunst is dreamy and delightful as the ditzy Betsy Jobs. Dunst has fun chemistry as friends with the cute and talented Michelle Williams as Arlene Lorenzo. Williams dumb blonde is also morally invested in her father’s origins and the war in Vietnam. Together, Dunst and Williams suck you into a riveting little comedy parodying Nixon’s presidency to teach you that blondes are fun and have brains. They get caught up in all manner of Watergate conspiracies and both give playful and engaging performances that captivate you every second of this film. Teri Garr is super funny as Michelle’s floozy mother Helen Lorenzo.

Dan Hedaya is a riot in a phenomenal performance as President Richard M. Nixon. His impression is spot on for the voice, but it’s his mannerisms and expressions that really bring his performance choices home. Saul Rubinek is excellently cast as Henry Kissinger. Will Ferrell is funny as a bumbling and foolish Bob Woodward and Bruce McCulloch is likewise fun as a vain and needy Carl Bernstein. G. D. Spradlin cameos as Ben Bradlee. Dave Foley is goofy as Bob Haldeman. Jim Breuer is excellent as the stuffy John Dean. Harry Shearer cameos a G. Gordon Liddy in a hilarious opener. Ryan Reynolds even cameos as the idiot Chip that makes out with Kirsten Dunst. All these men give great little character acting roles that elevate this comedy into something playful, yet biting.

Fleming’s direction is a breezy retelling of All the President’s Men with the paranoia and intrigue, but told as a teen comedy. Andrew Fleming and Sheryl Longin’s writing is quite clever ranging from tongue in cheek teen farce to witty political takedowns. Fleming’s direction blends all the 90’s irreverent comedies stylings with old 70’s detective noirs. He has a wonderful penchant for casting interesting and cool young ladies as his leading figures for both The Craft and Dick. I wish Fleming had made more movies as excellent as these two. Mia Goldman’s editing has a fun flair and a quick pace, but lets each scene play around for a bit without incessant modern cuts. Alexander Gruszynski’s cinematography is actually gorgeous with plenty of pretty close-ups and cool wide shots that look like D.C. Fleming was a talented director with a fantastic crew.

It’s a shame that Dick is forgotten as it’s certainly an underrated and underseen picture. I mean, it features my two favorite actresses of all time: Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams. They are both adorable and hilarious as the dumb blondes with good hearts in their bright purple and pink outfits. I should mention Deborah Everton’s costumes are cute and period accurate to the late 1960’s to the early 1970’s hippie girl outfits. I adore her American flag costumes for the big finale. You definitely feel the era with the 70’s pop soundtrack full of beloved classics to John Debney’s jazzy score. Barbara Dunphy and Lucinda Zak’s production design recreates The White House in detail as they decorate teenage girls’ rooms with colorful affinity for pink and fuzzy carpets.

This comedy is very funny and still relevant in its political humor. I highly recommend it!

I love this movie

The title sounds dirty, but the movie itself is PG-13. Though there are a few "Dick" jokes, they're about Richard "Dick" Nixon, not anyone's particular parts.

I love this movie, it's very funny. If you have a teenager in your house, they would probably like it too, and might even find some interest in the history of the Nixon administration--especially in the deleted oval office tapes. But if you don't have a teen, you'll still be laughing out loud at some of the scenes, like the one when Arlene and Betsy wander away during the White House field trip and return late to the bus. ("Because of your thoughtlessness, we have missed the field trip lunch at McDonalds, which the students on the OTHER buses are now enjoying. We will return to school for a COLD lunch in the cafeteria.")

Starring Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Dan Hedaya; featuring Will Ferrell, Bruce McCulloch, Dave Foley, Harry Shearer; and guest starring an absurdly young looking Ryan Reynolds.

P.S. One thing I don't like is that searching for the movie "Dick" even here on Amazon brings up a bunch of different results. I think people would love watching it if they could find it. It's funny, it's sweet, Arlene and Betsy are adorable BFFs, and Dick just makes you laugh.

SO FUNNY -- REMINDS ME OF WATCHING FOREST GUMP

I am age 62 so I am old enough to recall the Nixon mess but only as a young adult -- NOT at all interested in what was going on. I didn't CARE. This is a funny view of the entire scandal, making FUN of Washington politics as it retells the story through the eyes of two teenage girls. TERRIBLY FUNNY -- HUMOR -- NOT A SERIOUS FILM AT ALL.

BE PREPARED TO HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR. It brought back many memories of my Junior High and High School years in the 1960-s 1970s and the culture surrounding the Vietnam War. It also exposes the power players in Washington DC and how we really should BE AWARE of what they are doing!!

I later read the Christian book LIFE SENTENCE by Chuck Colson and I do recommend the book to Christian readers as one of the BEST books I've ever read by a Christian writer!! Wikipedia states that Chuck Colson, served as Special Counsel to President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1970. Once known as President Nixon's "hatchet man", Colson gained notoriety at the height of the Watergate scandal. MORE AT WIKI

No issues with the streaming video -- on Amazon Prime -- but Crackle FREE would NOT load this movie -- after multiple attempts I did an Amazon search and sourced it there. NO PROBLEMS ON AMAZON STREAMING.

this comedy explains what really happened in Watergate, where apparently one of these 2, 15 year old girls lived.
what a hilarious movie and you will love the music. whoever did this was a genius. I loved the movie. now I know where the 18 1/2 minutes cut from the Nixon Watergate tapes went.they make magic squares for the president and walk his dog. they call the cookies Hello Dollies, but from the ingredients , I realized they were magic squares: sweetened condensed milk, graham cracker crumbs, chocolate morsels butterscotch morsels, coconut and nuts.
then, you have Kissinger and the president of Russia singing hello dolly, after he eats a cookie. a lot of fun. the girls call themselves deep throat after her brother sees the porn film.

Horrible 70's

The 1970's clothing, décor, and "Groovy" hippie culture were very well captured. Woodward and Bernstein played by Will Farrell and another actor whose name escapes me were amusing. Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams were bubbly teen BFFs that bust Nixon after coming across incriminating evidence whilst being dog walkers for Nixon's dog Checkers at the White House. Then they give said evidence of the Watergate Spying to the Washington Post under the fictitious name Deep Throat. This sets up the Nixon scandal and he tenders resignation so then Gerald Ford assumes office. Of course, by now this infamous Nixon resignation is taught in textbooks and woven into our national tapestry. This is a semi amusing movie, but one I won't watch again. This campy spoof is not laugh out loud funny, but parts are quite amusing.

Truly one of the funniest movies.
Especially for us old timers who were around during the Watergate days and early drug days, you baby boomers know..
It is a bit sexist to say that the high school girls are a caricature of the women of the '70s but certainly not an insult to those great times and kids.
With crushes and being pseudo hippies at times, wearing the proper costume was part of the fun.
The Woodward and Bernstein characters are buffoons although not in real life but I'm sure they don't mind the fun that this movie has with them.
The depiction of President Nixon is hilarious if not realistic.

Best Watergate Movie

I teach Journalism in high school, and have long wanted a good movie to show the complexity and craziness and drama of Watergate.

"All the President's Men" is not it. "Dick" definitely is.

"All the President's Men" is dull and opaque and gets lost in minutiae--it's hard to follow even for me, and I know oceans about Watergate--so it is completely lost on the students. Worse still, it's undramatic. It has a plodding pace and dull characters.

"Dick" is the opposite. It was a stroke of genius to treat Watergate as a comedy, and better yet, a teen comedy.

It was another stroke of genius to make the clueless teen heroines "Deep Throat"--the mysterious informant who kept feeding Woodward and Bernstein an unending supply of truth about Nixon's and all his advisers' involvement. ("Dick" was made in 1999; the actual identity of Deep Throat was not revealed till 2005.)

And it was perhaps the crowning stroke of genius to provide Nixon with marijuana cookies as the spark behind several of his better policies--ending the Vietnam war, the nuclear weapons treaty with Brezhnev, etc.

(Side note. Grace Slick, in her autobiography, tells how Julie, Nixon's daughter, invited Slick to the White House for some function, because Julie and Slick had gone to the same college. Slick decided to go, and slip Tricky Dick some LSD. This was a brilliant plan, but fortunately did not succeed. The thought of Dick's head on acid and his finger on the Bomb is not a pretty one.)

"Dick" has wonderful touches. Hedaya is perfect as Nixon--looks, voice, evil, paranoia. It is lovely that he can't remember his daughters' names. The actors playing Haldeman, Kissinger, Dean, et al. are also good. The episodes involving the lost 18 minutes of tape are priceless.

The movie is dumb but extremely likable. It gets the songs, the clothes, the slogans, the silliness and fun of the early 70s just right. Plus, it's actually quite educational.

Delightful Satire

At the time the Watergate scandal occurred, many of us were stunned by the events unfolding in the press. It was like we were witnessing an episode of the Twilght Zone. This film presents a marvelously humorous opportunity to see an alternative scenario to what could only be described as absurd behavior by the power elite in the Nixon administration, that literally self-destructed, as though they were a bunch of inept adolescents. I love this movie!
