A number of people have stopped me to ask where I got these.
They are an excllent investment.
The suspenders are made of strong elastic with rigid black plastic adjustment buckles and hooks that slip under your belt. There is a single 2" wide band at the rear and two thinner 1-1/2" bands over the shoulders. The connecting patch at the back is leather on the outside and vinyl on the inside with "Dickies" and "Perry Suspenders" stamped into the leather.
The suspenders come in different colors. The ones I've seen are a light tan or black, and both of these come with a brown leather patch. (On the black suspenders, the patch can be dyed black with leather dye and polished, but you have to remove the original brown finish first with 90% denatured alcohol and let it fully dry; obviously mask off the elastic first.)
You do need to wear a fairly stiff belt to use these suspenders. The plastic clips slide under the belt rather than attaching to your pants like clip suspenders. However, this is an advantage, because since they pull up on the belt, rather than your pants, they support your pants better. You can wear the belt just barely snug or even a little loose.
One reviewer noted that since the suspenders don't have metal clips or buckles, they avoid the hassle of setting off metal detectors in airports or government buildings. But you'd also obviously have to wear a belt with a plastic Fastex-type buckle, like some military nylon belts.
Unlike metal clip suspenders, these suspenders won't accidentally come off if they are adjusted right. However, if you need to take down your pants, you have to remove the suspsenders first or they will just fall off the belt when you take the straps off your shoulders.Read more ›
Another issue: the suspenders can pull up on your belt in front between the two front belt loops so that the front of the belt (including the buckle) is resting on your shirt an inch or two above your pants.
And of course you *do* have to wear a belt with these suspenders; with traditional suspenders you don't.
In short, it's a nifty idea to have plastic-hook suspenders that don't need to bite into your pants and which can go through airport security, but there are some resulting downsides.
These suspenders are a remarkably simple solution and I can't believe I have gone this long without knowing about this product. Perry suspenders hook over your belt very securely instead of biting onto your pants. What a simple yet elegant solution. The Suspenders have 3 hooks 2 in front and 1 in back. the back one is split into a double hook just in case you have a pair of pants with the belt loop directly in the center...the hook straddles the belt loop so this design is compatible with any pair of pants you own provided they can be worn with a belt.
The other benefit of this system is when I walk away from the job site and no longer need the additional support I can easily pop off the hooks and slip the suspenders into my tool box so I do not forget them in the morning and walk to my car wearing just my belt. They go on and come off much easier than traditional suspenders. I really used to hate wearing suspenders, but after using these for about a week It really doesn't bother me at all anymore.
