“That's the power of Sharp's work and this nonviolent struggle, it doesn't matter who you are—black, white, Muslim, Christian, gay, straight, or oppressed minority—it's useable. If they study it, anybody can do this.”  —Srdja Popovic, director, Center for Applied Non Violent Action & Stretegies

Rarely does a book change your perspective. From Dictatorship to Democracy changed mine. While billed as a conceptual framework, it's the truths arising from interviews that show how individuals can catalyze change in their societies leading to peaceful regime change. And while I'm utterly impressed with the clear, political implications of this book, I am almost more amazed about how its insights can be applied to business transformation. From Democracy To Dictatorship, is not only the most accessible work of politics that I've read in some time, but also one of the most lucid roadmaps to reforming management practice that I have ever encountered.

Great book, great author. If you are interested in the subjects of insurgency and counterinsurgency, this is a must read. Sharp lays out how modern hostile regimes cannot be undermined with violence. He describes numerous techniques for mobilizing populations and maintaining the legitimacy of freedom movements.

This is essential reading for anyone living in an oppressive regime such as ours in Venezuela. it is also highly recommended for those who are concerned and wish to help. It is a lucid and very accessible dissertation on why, whilst we don't need your guns, your support is indispensable.

Having entered the field in the 1960s reading insurgency and counter-insurgency, with "The Age of Martin Luther King" in a separate pigeon hole, reading this book was seeing many things I though I knew - for the first time.

It is not just nuts and bolts, though those are neat - this is a thoughtful, real world but also idealistic discussion of values, philosophy and politics. Perhaps less openly spiritual or theological language than Gandhi, King or The Fellowship of Reconciliation, but not hostile to those perspectives.

I am looking at the author's other books, as this book shouts that its author is well worth reading in full.

Although some of the terminology is dated, the plea for non-violent struggle as apposed to violent coup is of universal appeal! Both liberal and conservatives will find something to like in this volume. The author makes a good case that, in most circumstances, non-violent action produces more lasting benefits and less destruction than violence.

Nothing in life can be done without planning, reviewing alternatives, laying down a strategy and evaluating tactics that can be used. In this case, all of these measures carry their share of risks, these have also to be evaluated.
Relative secrecy is of importance. For any people to engange in changing their dictatorship this is a starter that must be read. It also makes it plain that there exist organizations worldwide with ample experience that can help in giving actual courses and clarifying and adapting methods to special situations encountered in different countries. It is a primer both for the activist and the politician who wants to make sure that any action has a relative possibility of success. I rate it only with four stars because additional teaching by experts is required.

Surely you have noticed that the same identical unimaginative monotonous chant accompanies the majority of protests and demonstrations, so much so that it has become a target of ridicule: “What do we want? Blaaaah-blaaah!! When do we want it? Now!!” Bleating like sheep. After hours of individual efforts fine-tuning slogans to paint on placards, and days spent by the organisers in promotion and seeking planning permits, one person out of every 2,000 residents, if you’re lucky, bothers to turn up. Major embarrassment, to the extent that it possibly undermines the very positive action one hoped to draw attention to. More people turn-up to a fun run.

The reasons for dismal numbers, as configured by organisers and participants alike, often – but not solely – targets those in the population who disdain politics and/or “don’t care enough” to get out in the streets.

How to organise against governments that ignore public opinion, human rights, and climate science, etc is not a problem unique to climate activists.

The title of the book derives from its history, and how and when and for what aims the material was used. So put aside any apprehension/prejudice concerning the title, it won’t bite. This little book is invaluable for anybody who wants to raise any important issue in public fora.

Gene Sharp, an anti-Korean war resister, has long been a student and advocate of political defiance, aka non-violent resistance. Sharp’s focus has been on over-throwing totalitarian regimes, on analysing and developing strategies and methods for those who want to be rid of a dictator. But. Regardless of whether one is attempting to introduce democracy or to improve the existing models, what Sharp has written comprises a booklet that is applicable to both situations.
