For the better part of a century, the Left has been waging a slow, methodical battle for control of the institutions of Western civilization. Stephen R. ..almost impossible to put down. This book arrived on Thursday and it's been a nearly 'read right through experience'...I finished it this afternoon waiting for my COVID shot, at a CVS, 6 feet away from a woman droning on and on about the 'corporate powers that be' and bemoaning the fact that we had to wait for Biden to get elected to be able to get the vaccine....and I began to despair. I wondered how many more like her are out there and began to despair some more. I immediately went back to where the author speaks again of 'the immanentizing the eschaton' and reread it ---and laughed out loud!
This is a perfect book to read, reread---underline...take notes and realize that with analysis such as this author brings there IS HOPE that we can work through the March of Wokeness that is fouling the Republic and the Judeo-Christian West. It's a warning bell. It needs more and wider exposure.
If one is a long time reader of Soukup's work it has the familiarity one gets with an old friend. It's a fun (yes--fun!), and easy read---depressing as Hell at times---but eye-opening and wonderfully footnoted.
At my age I am always delighted to learn new 'stuff' and this book....delights!

A Great Supplement To Thomas Sowell’s Work

Stephen did a great job of articulating in detail the not so obvious set of incentives, constraints and (growing lack of) feedback in the heavily controlled proxy service market and the limited number of unconstrained (See Sowell’s Conflict of Visions for more detail) self proclaimed moral geniuses including Larry Fink and how those services and geniuses are very much politicizing the major markets through ETF proxy voting.

Hopefully this knowledge will become common place particularly for individual shareholders (they still control approximately 1/3 of all financial assets).

Only Two Choices: Dictatorship or Disorder

Interesting description of the leftist takeover of business and capital markets to promote the Woke agenda; concludes that only two possible paths remain (1) the dictatorship of the Woke, or (2) social and civilizational disorder, allowing (encouraging?) different ideas to conflict:

“Conflict in politics is normal and, in a state in which the people serve as the sovereign, is inevitable. But the knee-jerk demand for order in the face of this conflict is, quite simply, the path to dictatorship and the subjugation of those whose values differ from the majority. When those who hold the most power in society determine to end conflict by waging total war and destroying those they’ve identified as enemies, society loses everything, not just its variety but the very mechanism by which variety is created in the first place.

Disorder is uncomfortable. It is messy. It is not always efficient. But it is from disorder that creative destruction springs. The urge to bring order to disorder, to impose constancy on variability, to consolidate values is not just the means by which liberty is killed, it is also the means by which Schumpeter’s gale [“creative destruction”] is killed.

The choice here is simple. If we as a civilization allow even the spirit of capitalism to become part of “the political” and part of the total state, then we will have order—for however long that lasts. If we resist the politicization of business and of capital markets, however; if we determine for ourselves that disorder and depoliticization are the preferable options, then we not only preserve liberty but also preserve the spirit of innovation and expression that harnesses liberty to create wealth and prosperity.”

Subtracted a star because the naming of names became monotonous; nonetheless, an important contribution to the understanding of our contemporary society.

I saw this author interviewed by Tucker Carlson and decided to read his book. I am far from sophisticated on financial matters but the theme of the book is frightening. The financialization of the US economy has resulted in creating billionaires who are expert in manipulating money, They don't make anything but they have gotten very rich. The are taking over corporate America and imposing rules that make little sense except as an explanation of their guilt over fortunes earned by manipulation of money.

Reading the first few sections of this book, I was afraid I wasn't going to be smart enough to consume it, but Soukup does a great job of bringing it all together into a cohesive narrative that will leave a reader enlightened and more aware of the constant efforts of mind control woke corporations are expending. From the origins of critical theory with Herbert Marcuse, to the deceitful ESG nihilism of Tim Cook and Bob Iger, you will exit this book a much better informed intellect, ready to continue the battle for your right to think for yourself.

Title and Content Relationship Not Totally Valid

The first half of the book involved a rant about long worded academic historical philosophy discussions that had nothing to do with the title. Last half he got to the valid discussion of "shareholder " vs "stakeholder". The shareholder issue is defined as concern about maximizing shareholder return. The stakeholder issue is portrayed as a lobby and internal unauthorized catering to current "in" social causes. The issue that is sadly missed is that the Free Enterprise real capitalist merit is producing goods that are needed or in demand at an input of capital and labor cost less the value of the needed product produced. That is why Free enterprise works and socialism does not. Perhaps author was only dealing with financial manipulation not real Free Enterprise. In the end he points out examples of corporate double speak. Bottom line good read just ignore the first half.
