When I saw this book I was sure there is many pictures of all kind of symbols and different lines/ circles/ squares and so Combine together and under each one of them there is an explaination what this lines/ shape means. There is many symbols that I come across many times and I would like to know what the meaning of each (or at least most of them).
Unfortunately this book is alot of blah.. blah.. blah.. talking and writing so much without even 1 picture/ Symbol for example. This book is full of unnecessary and unusefull information for me. Not what I expected. Not at all!!!
They tell me some Historic facts for example what the meaning of the product 'Honey' for the ancient Greek people.. Come on! why should I care?.. I want many pictures and symbols printed on each page + explaination. I don't need to look for certain things (Objects, Body parts, etc) just by their names and read what meaning it has during the History of humanity.. I mean, It's like a dictionary. You have to look for the name of whatever and read about it'd meaning in some cultures or during the history. This is lame! What if I am looking for a certain symbol that has no name (just meaning)?? and what if it has some mysterious name that I don't know what it is? I think seeing symbols in front of your eyes is much more effective and useful.
Uggggh! What a WASTE of money! I wish I never bought this book. I am so disappointed!!!
If all you are looking for is definitions, then by all means, this book will do fine by you. If, however, you need a more in-depth understanding of each symbol, then you will find yourself looking into other texts.
This is so much more than one of those this is what the symbol means, this provides true semiotic description and analysis often with historical context. Excellent tool for writers and close readers or people just interested in signs and symbols.
I don't see how you could call this a dictionary of symbols. Nearly every entry is pure text- without a graphical representation of the symbols themselves.
Glaring omissions of symbols like the pentagram are bunched into a group category of "graphics."
This book is for putting on a shelf for bored friends to read. If you are interested in comparative studies or metaphysical meanings, find a better book.
