Many "vegetarian" or "vegan" cookbooks teach in terms of substitute proteins -- what I call the "tofurkey" approach that focuses on replacing animal meats with imitations and analogs. It was Frances Moore Lappe's great gift to us to throw out the concept that something called an "entree" must center the dinner table, whether or not said entree consisted of meat, fish, molded lentils or whatever. Instead, she focuses on protein complementarities, the technique of melding vegetable sources with incomplete amino acids into full proteins (for example, corn and legume beans; milk and peanuts).

It's a wonderful way to think, plan, and cook; as a result this wonderful little book has braved the test of time and is now in its third decade. And may I say -- the recipes are very tasty indeed. Cheers!

I ordered this book expecting a colourful book full of recipes. Not what I got

As I remember, this is one of the first books about the vegetarian diet. A classic. Very good if you're just starting out. Not lots of recipes, more general information about the vegetarian lifestyle and why it's a good alternative.

This is an awesome resource. I originally got it from the library, but couldn't finish it in time and wanted it as a future reference anyways. I'm still reading it and am learning so much about world hunger, my role in it, complete protein combinations, and everything in between. With that said, I haven't read the original version, but it seems as though the 20th anniversary edition has a bit too much editorializing for my taste. I would rather the book be written more "professionally" without all of the background information about what Frances Moore Lappe was thinking when she wrote each chapter and what was going on in her personal life. Just the same, I love this book and can't wait to finish it.

I bought this book years ago, and my daughter asked me for the Roman Rice and Beans recipe so I sent her a picture of it and ordered her a copy of the book. When I began to avoid eating meat I bought this book, read it and tried various recipes. I always have it in my kitchen. I just think it’s a great book to have. I obviously never met the author but I like to think of Frances Moore Lappe’ as an old friend. Thank you to her for writing this book.

Unfortunately the copy of this book that a bought I the seventies ( yes, really!) went missing. It was in pretty bad shape anyhow, I HAD to have the wonderful tomato rice soup one day so I went ahead and bought an e- copy.
I am not a vegetarian but try to eat healthy and I have enjoyed many of the recipes through the years. If you make nothing else make the tomato rice soup (like Campbell's never dreamed of). You probably have most, if not all the ingredients in you kitchen, and there is nothing better on a cold winter day than a hearty soup that you didn't have to go out in the cold to shop for.
The first part of the book makes a good argument for going vegetarian.

Very disappointed with this book. It doesnt mention very much about what foods to combine for a complete protein, and recipies are hard find. When I do find them, it looks like I wont be able to afford to make them anyway with so many different ingredients in them. Also lots of research looks convincing, till you notice the dates, dont see any from the year 2000 or after. Are any of them still true? Like my old paperback edition better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great condition!

This was a replacement for a much loved and disintegrating paperback from 1975! I’m thrilled to have this “new” 20th anniversary copy from 1991. Aside from a slight dent at the bottom of the pages, it’s in perfect condition and appears to be unread. The price was very reasonable, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A life-changer for me
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 26, 2017
With reference to a 2-star review by 'a customer'. Absolutely correct Doc Z in your comment on this review....also I can add, having been a vegan now for 32 years, that I found this book an inspiration....when there were very few recipe and theoretical books were available (Eva Batt from Folkestone springs to mind, bless her, where almost every recipe seemed to have Marmite [Barmene!] in them).....as far as supplements go....hogwash to 'a customer'. I never bothered with B12, B this, that or B the other....but I love food and creative cooking...and still have to watch the waistline. I'm going to buy this new anniversary edition again for my daughter-in-law who is a qualified nutritionist....let's see what SHE has to say about it. Can I give it 10 stars to make up for the 2 x 2star reviews given by 'a customer'?

4.0 out of 5 stars El libro es estupendo, el recetario deja que desear
Reviewed in Spain on November 28, 2016
