It took losing the woman I loved and facing the paralyzing task of moving on without her for me to truly understand that.
Consumed by regret and razor-sharp memories, I’d resigned myself to a life of loneliness until a survivor from the same plane crash that took my fiancée stormed into my life.
Remi Grey was chaos and sunshine, fire and freedom. With her in my arms, I began to believe that fate had other plans for me.
But as secrets of the past exploded around us, it seemed the only thing fated about our relationship was that I had been destined to lose her from the start.
The world owes you nothing. But for Remi, I would risk it all. No matter the cost.

About the author

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four hilarious children.
Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys movies that can surprise her with a twist, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.
She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a glass of wine by her side.

Seriously. I am at a loss for words other than—if you like a well crafted story with a tantalizing plot, characters with explosive chemistry and a few twists along the way then you NEED TO READ THIS BOOK NOW!!!
There’s so many twists and turns. I’m kind of still in a state of shock.
But back to the first Difference book! Sigh. I'm still stuck on explaining how it's left me very much gobsmacked. I don't want to give out details, even the teeniest bit. I mean, sure, I've mentioned the main characters, twenty-nine-year-old real estate agent Remi Grey and thirty-two-year-old accountant Bowen Michaels, but that's it. I honestly feel that I'm doing you a favor by not saying anything else. Should you go into this blind? Absolutely. Did I read the blurb prior to reading the book? Yes, I did, but this was when the cover for the books were revealed earlier this month, so by the time I actually read the series starter, I couldn't recall what was in the blurb in the first place. So, my best piece of advice is to skip reading the blurb.
And now, here we are again at the part where I feel like I don't have adequate words to explain the impact this book had on me. Let me just share the three paragraphs I originally had in my notes as I was reading this: Paragraph One: GAH!; Paragraph Two: Le sigh.; Paragraph Three: O. M. G!!! Yep. That's it. If I sat down and spent more time, I could probably come up with a sufficiently acceptable wordy review, but I'm also trying to not post anything spoiler-like. So basically, allow me to leave you with three pieces of advice: 1. Go in blind; 2. Read this book; 3. Prepare to be awed. Five-plus stars for The Difference Between Somebody and Someone.
The story begins months after a horrific plane crash that leaves only a small number of passengers alive. Picking up the pieces of their lives after being released from the hospital and trying to move on, the survivors' lives cross again and again as the lawsuit against the negligent airline comes to a close. Everyone lost something and for Bowen, he lost his fiance, a woman he deeply loved. Remi and her roommate lost their sense of security and are left with PTSD. When Bowen and Remi’s paths cross multiple times, it seems fate is bringing them together for a reason.
This story is just spectacular and there were many things I didn’t see coming. I usually can predict the main plot twists, but with this one, I am quite glad that I sat back and let the story unfold without trying to figure anything out. Book 1 of a trilogy I know there is much more to come for Bowen and Remi and I can’t wait to see where their story takes them.

I wish I could find another author whose books I enjoy as much as Aly. There is always an emotional depth, believable, likable but flawed and human characters and deep emotional connections between the main characters. Usually these emotional connections are made stronger because of adversity - dark and difficult situations. But Aly's books don't feel dark and depressing.
This book goes forwards and backwards in time. Bowden believed Sally was his soul mate but much of their relationship was spent dealing with a traumatic event. Bowden's history with Sally is told in flashbacks in reverse order 'before the plane crash' (starting with 1 month before and going back further in time with each chapter from the past). Meanwhile in the present a lost and lonely Bowden keeps unexpectedly meeting Remi (who was also in the plane crash) and they are instantly drawn to each other.
And like most of Aly's books... expect an unexpected twist. Because I can't immediately continue reading Bowden & Remi's story I have started re-reading this book straight away to see what clues I missed on the first read!
I Love love love Aly's books.. The suspense, the dark situations and the intense emotional connections. Her books are on a totally different level to most of the romance books out there! Thank you Aly and keep creating these fantastic broken but strong characters!

I honestly don't know how to review this without giving away spoilers. Read the blurb and trust that Aly Martinez wrote a beautiful book with great characters, secondary characters don't have as much time on the page but they are still pretty good too. And the story itself is pretty freaking good! Poor Bowen, Reimi and Sally! It's *not* a love triangle and there's no cheating either. Just a lot of traumdid. I suppose I was just shocked more than anything. And surprised!
Please do yourself a favour and read this book. If the blurb isn't enough to convince you, just think that some big romancea. Surprisingly this book didn't make me cry. But that's not enough of a barometer to tell the book slayed me. Because it authors have been talking about this book too. 😉
