He went to a doctor who specialize in gender confusing. The doctor and his mother knew that Michael was more a girl. A boy! So he started to experiment to wear girl clothes. On a small scale. Then his father. Found out that his son. Was dress as a girl so ashamed him into wear a dress in public. Those Michael father found that is plan back fired! It which cause to cause more problems. Then he had a fainting spell. Which cause him to have a vision. Which gave him clear choice. He decided to choice what is soul want to match is body. And then he discover a secret of Ellen's.

This is an exquisitely crafted story of a young boy who is faced with a critical life decision no child should have to face. But dangerous circumstances leave this boy no option except to face the challenge and make a decision that will affect the rest of his life. He has two ways he can go but not that much time to decide which is best for him. The way the author handles the delicate subject matter and weaves the story makes it very easy for you to relate to, and empathize with the various characters and understand their feelings and decisions even though you may not agree with them. This is ultimately a story of self discovery for a young boy learning how to figure out who he really is at his core and what he will be in life. You also see the affects on his parents and how they react to and deal with a very difficult situation.

Having grown up with a relative that is transgendered, I have witnessed first hand the self doubts, shame, guilt, mental torments and anguish that can tear at the heart and soul of such individuals because of the pressures and expectations, as well as the condemnation, of family, friends and society in general. So it is heartening to see a story that handles this sensitive subject matter in such a thoughtful, objective and sensitive manner. This is a story that will touch your heart (if you have one that isn't made of stone) and make you think.

Being inside the psyche and innermost thoughts of the 9 year-old central character was so real it was *spooky*; and I found it perfectly within keeping of my own memories. The author's intelligence, daring, and caring humor captures all of the fear, conflicts, sensitivity, and wishes of a transgendered child with full childhood sexuality intact. The portrayal of the main character taking refuge in and basking in 'his' mother's love was utterly heart-warming, and really reminded me of my relationship with my own Mother. The tension with the concerned father was realistic too, if muted. The inter-relationships with both parents and peers and situations were simply spot-on. The whole story was immensely enjoyable. I nearly came to a tear somewhere in the middle. This story wouldn't shine as it does told by a less sensitive and intelligent author, one who's *been* there. One who understands a child's mind intricately, and moreover understands the human heart. I read a lot of transgender fiction, and she has become one of my very favorite writers with one go.

I have read some of her other stories contain very severe violence, which I may not enjoy. I am glad it is not present in this one, and I hope more stories such as this are forthcoming. I whole-heartedly recommend this story to anyone, and sincerely thank the author for touching my own heart with hers.

The author has written a novel touching all the bases of gender dysphoria, from the actual realization of the forbidden fantasy of the transgender child to the exploration of the philosophical conflict of our bigendered society, where personal freedoms are an illusion and societal expectations fostered by paternalism are the norm. This is a sensitive novel by an author who has the courage to gracefully and tastefully touch, not only upon a child's gender issues, but the sexuality of children, an important but oft neglected area ordinarily taboo to literature, but here outlined with unerring innocence and sweetness. Just another wonderful novel by a fine and passionate writer.

A very touching story and very life changing as well and the sort of book I couldn't put down.

The story without giving to much away revolves around a boy and his very best friend a girls and out there lives work around each other but with the boy getting cancer and has to make some life changing decisions.

A mother who wants a girl and a dad who wants his son back conflicts of interest and friends who just want there friend to be happy.

Again for a book to get a 5 star rating from me it has to be a very good read and this hits the mark I just couldn't put the book down.

I loved this book and I'm not going to post spoilers except to say it has a lovely believable story, an interesting choice posed to the main character, a best friend Ellen, who deserves her own sequel or prequel and does it's best to keep you guessing what the character will choose to do, right until nearly the last page.

I really hope the author writes a sequel for this character, and/or writes Ellen's story as a stand alone or part of an interconnected series.

Very moving story. Great sense of real people, too. An absolute must read to feel a lot more about emotions and real tough personal decisions - and the bias of some, too.. Katie Leone deserves much praise for this. There are a few editorial errors but I don't care because the characters in this book are realistically painted by the artistic, tough and honest treatment of the author.

Despite being shown as much prejudice as he was given help, Michael shows a maturity that children sometimes surprise us with.
