While researching information about my father's WWII experience, I discovered a secret. My father had been a commando in occupied Greece during the war. Like so many men from the Greatest Generation, he had never spoken about his experiences. The Office of Strategic Services, the OSS, sent uniformed units into several occupied countries, including Greece in the latter part of the war. My father was one of those men. While doing the research about my father I found a compelling story. Greece's Jewish community made a deal with the Nazis to avoid deportation. The Germans collected the accumulated wealth of the Jews as ransom, then sent them to the death camps. The Holocaust decimated the Greek Jews and their wealth disappeared with them. Today the Greek Jewish community, once one of the largest in southern Europe remains small and the mystery of the stolen ransom remains unsolved.
