Health begins in the gut. In addition to digestive disorders, many other health problems can stem from damage to your intestines, including migraines, skin problems, autoimmune conditions, and weight abnormalities, so tackling your digestion first is smart if you want to maximize your chances of obtaining optimal health. Beyond simply managing your symptoms, Digestive Health with REAL Food will teach you how to address the root causes of your digestive troubles to achieve optimal digestive and overall health.

The information in Digestive Health with REAL Food will help you build your own optimal diet by identifying the best foods for your digestive system: ones that are easy to digest, anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense, healing and low in irritants and allergens. The nutritional protocol in this book, developed by registered dietitian Aglaée Jacob, addresses numerous digestive problems, including:

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) | Crohn s disease | Ulcerative colitis Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) |Fructose malabsorption FODMAP intolerance | Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Gallbladder issues | Abnormal intestinal permeability (leaky gut) Gut dysbiosis (gut flora imbalance) | Celiac disease | Non-celiac gluten sensitivity Multiple food sensitivities | And many more...

In addition to guiding you on how to successfully follow an elimination diet, Aglaée will teach you everything you need to know about dietary supplements, stress management, eating out, and travel strategies, as well as how to troubleshoot various digestive problems. The book includes over 40 recipes, each accompanied by a stunning color photograph, meal/snack ideas, helpful charts, food lists and weekly meal plans to get you started on the path to better digestion.

Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to digestive problems, but the evidence-based, customized and holistic nutritional approach in Digestive Health with REAL Food will give you the tools to tackle your digestive issues and optimize your health.

Aglaée is a registered dietitian, naturopathic student and author of the book & cookbook "Digestive Health with REAL Food".

She graduated with a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Nutrition from Laval University (Québec City, Canada) and then worked as a dietitian diabetes educator in Ottawa for 3 years before realizing that the training she had received wasn't allowing her to help people as much as she had hoped. She then decided to open her mind to other schools of thought and started digging into the scientific literature to explore alternative options. Since then, she developed an evidence-based, holistic approach that not only allows her to get better results with her clients, but that also helped her heal herself.

She recently published a book called "Digestive Health with REAL Food: a practical guide to an anti-inflammatory, low-irritant, nutrient-dense diet for IBS & other digestive issues" in 2013 and a companion cookbook of the same name in 2014. She is a regular contributor to many publications, including Paleo Magazine, liveSTRONG.com and Today's Dietitian. Aglaée is passionate about health, but she also loves food, traveling and walking in nature. She is trilingual (fluent in English, French and Spanish) and is now studying naturopathic medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto.

I can remember hitting a wall with my own digestive health after multiple tests, appointments, suggestions, and supplements from my MD as well as naturopath. I found myself one night sitting down and googling my alphabet soup of suggestions i'd received "SCD, GAPS, FODMAPS, nightshades, Paleo-AIP" and hit enter...and the first site to pop up was Aglaee's Paleo Dietician site. Right there, in this one website were charts describing ALL those diets and morphing them into one real foods approach to gut health. I was mystified! How could this one person seem to "get" all my questions circulating in my head so easily? I knew she MUST have been down a similar digestive path if she knew that a person would so easily be comparing/contemplating all these diet avenues and feeling lost...and might be wanting a way to combine it all for an optimal shot at gut recovery. I found myself clicking around her site more and learning more and more and feeling more at ease. So i took a leap of faith and sent a message to this random dietician in Canada...only to wake up that next morning and have a message back! I quickly decided i'd like to work with her so joined one of her REAL Food monthly groups. Then, as i was gleaning SO much information from her each day within that group, she decided to start a Digestive Health with REAL Food online group and i knew that was the next logical step for me, I already knew real food/paleo quite well, but still needed more held fine tuning my gut recovery from SIBO. Month by month i learned more and more and took far greater strides in my health than i ever have before.

Then Aglaee announced her upcoming book release and i will be honest, I thought for a moment, "What more could I learn in a written book? I've already learned SO much from her/the group...I'm sure it's all just review for me". But then i decided i had learned so much from her, I'd very much like a book so that i could share the info with others who asked me about my recovery/gut health, so I ordered it. I will tell you quite honestly that this book did not just meet my expectations, it FAR surpassed them. I skimmed the entire LARGE book the first night it arrived...believe me, it was worth a late bedtime that night! Then, starting the next day, I read the book...again, this is a FULL book, a LARGE book! Now, i'm half way through re-reading it. That's three times through and i'm learning more EVERY time.

A few of the things that work so well for me in the book (and there are many...but for the sake of space i'll just name a few!):
1) Some of the most easy to follow charts for fast reference that i've ever seen. Keeping in mind, I was already in love with Practical Paleo for the charts it had, this one goes far beyond.
2)The way reading it feels like i'm having a conversation with a friend about the issues. Literally i can be reading about the benefits of probiotics and in the back of my mind thinking, "yeah...but i've reacted to many of them" and then in the very next sentences Aglaee will acknowledge and discuss how/why some folks react to probiotics, even though they are often suggested early on to folks with gut issues. The same thing for fermented foods, bone broth, and even the various foods higher in FODMAPS. She gets it, that it's NOT a one size fits all tx approach for gut recovery.
3) She is practical. There is never a condeming feeling in the book for when you fall off the wagon/have a lapse in your food plan. She acknowledges it happens, is compassionate, and moves on to what to do about it.
4) There's no hiding in the book/how it's written as you read it that she's been there, been through the trenches of an elimination diet and working slowly back to building her own diet for optimal gut health. It's like reading a book on pregnancy...do you REALLY want to read a book from a man on how your body will feel/handle pregnancy when he never could have experienced it? Same thing here...reading from someone who has felt the ongoing stomach issues and has had to exert her own time, energy, patience to re-build her gut...to experience bad food reactions and continue to move forward, it is a comfort and understanding in sharing info/education that only comes from having been there and knowing what it feels like.
5) Beautiful pictures and recipes that you can actually use as you're reintroducing foods (plus tips for how to continue to keep out potentially problematic foods and still use her recipes). Word has it that a correlating cookbook with additional recipes will be out later this year, I'm guessing that will be just as awesome and on my wish list as well!

I tried Gluten Free eating...it was not enough for my gut...I tried Paleo and it was not enough for my gut...I tried SCD and it still had triggers in it for my gut. A random night of googling out of frustration/despair/and ongoing gut issues and i found/tried Aglaee...then i started making true progress.

I had fructose malabsorption (FM) since I was a teenager. I switched to a Paleo diet and began taking a high quality multiple strain probiotic every day earlier this year (at age 39). Within a couple weeks, my acid reflux was almost completely gone. A couple months later, I read this book and discovered that my FM might be caused by too much bad bacteria and/or gluten in my gut. I started to reintroduce foods that I could not tolerate previously and found that they no longer caused a reaction. It's been about 10 months since I started the Paleo diet + probiotic and I'm now completely cured of both acid reflux and FM. I can now eat whatever I want, including high fructose foods such as pears and apples and highly acidic foods such as strawberries, pineapple, and tomato sauce. I've also lost 15 lbs in the process. I now have zero digestive issues - even while taking an antibiotic to treat a sinus infection! The antibiotic always caused stomach cramps and diarrhea before, but this time around, the same antibiotic (which I've taken a dozen times) had no affect. Paleo is really easy to follow. After a few weeks, the cravings for bread and desert go away. Then, you slowly start to lose your taste for sugary foods. Now, I couldn't drink soda even if I wanted to. It has the same appeal as drinking maple syrup straight from the bottle. Wheat bread still tastes good, but I no longer crave it. The only food I get cravings for now is real food. I enjoy Paleo bread, Paleo muffins, and Paleo pizza. Instead of drinking soda, I now drink a 10:1 sparkling water / fruit juice mix and take a tea supplement for caffeine. Start with half juice half sparkling water and work your way down. Hope this helps!

this is a very good book on the subject of digestive health! if you have serious health issues, particularly related to the digestive system or autoimmune diseases, read this book. but don't let this be the only book you read on the subject!
the (very) short list of safe foods the author recommends (hopefully) for a short period is strikingly similar to the list of foods dr. Henry G. Bieler included in his famous soup/broth (see Food Is Your Best Medicine - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345351835/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_11 and keep in mind that the latter was published in 1987!).
I have tried the diet suggested in this book but was able to stick to it for only a few days as I couldn't sleep well. The diet was waaay too low carb for me and I believe it to be so for most women after doing some research and finding out that women need a certain amount of carbs to ensure hormonal balance. The issue of carb (i.e. starch) necessity is very well explained in The Perfect Health Diet - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_18?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=the%20perfect%20health%20diet&sprefix=the+perfect+health%2Cstripbooks%2C444.
It turned out all I needed to do (at least at this stage) was eliminate cocoa completely. There are indeed other (further) measures I must take in orther to heal my gut and the suggestions in this book are helpful, but I wouldn't stick with just this book. For example, the author includes cod liver oil as a recommended supplement and after experimenting with this oil, never again will I take or suggest someone take it (in line with Paul Jaminet's opinion on the issue of fermented fish oils).
The book discusses the issue of SIBO which is in fact new to many doctors. Unfortunately it doesn't point to a root cause or final remedy as most people need to undergo treatment with antibiotics every several months.
Don't expect the recipes to be too tasty. They're ok given the very short list of vegetables allowed and given the fact that you can enlarge the list after only a few weeks (if you are lucky).
Still the list of foods allowed is very very short! and you will need some form of supplement to help you cope.
To conclude, this is a very helpful book on the issue of digestive health and if you have some kind of trouble in that area, this would be the very first book I recommend and only if accompanied by Jaminet's Perfect Health Diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Für mich das beste Buch zur Ernährung mit Reizdarm und Darmproblemen
Reviewed in Germany on May 14, 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for everyone with any gut disorder!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 19, 2018
I've just bought this book to download onto my Kindle (can't afford an iPad) and I've just read the first chapter! Wow, if I'd had this information fifty plus years ago I would not be suffering IBS, Diverticulitis and many other gut disorders that I've suffered for over sixty years. I've been prescribed anti-reflux tablets for many years but I now find that the problem is not too much acid being produced but quite the reverse; insufficient acid being produced. An osteopath told me this some twenty years ago but she died before I could take it further. This book should be required reading by the British Medical Council and Doctors everywhere; it's an absolute eye-opener for me! If you have digestive disorders, especially IBS and/or diverticular disease then you really should read this book. I feel so angry that the BMC have not embraced this doctrine and are still pumping-out anti-reflux tablets for people, like me, who have acid reflux and IBS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Six stars~!

I cannot recommend Aglaée Jacob's book, Digestive Health with Real Food, highly enough (Six stars~!)

My husband was debilitated by extreme & undiagnosable nausea for almost 19 months. During this time, a host of specialists poked, prodded, tested and hypothesized & came up with nothing (then shrugged & left us alone with a deteriorating, undiagnosed, unresponsive health issue that has caused him to be unable to work since December 2013).

We have tried all kinds of nutritional therapies, including a strict Autoimmune Protocol (& a low-FODMAP Autoimmune Protocol). The Autoimmune Protocol helped his autoimmune symptoms, but the nausea just kept getting worse, until he was almost completely disabled.

We heard about Aglaée Jacob's book from someone who was experiencing the resolution of her long-term health issues through this protocol & ordered it right away.

Within 9 days on this new protocol my husband's nausea had reduced from a 7-10 (on a scale of 0-10, in which ‘0’ is no nausea and ’10’ is completely incapacitated) to a 4-6. Six weeks later, it is still in the 4-6 range, but with the reduction in nausea (& his increased capacity to get nutrients from food) he is gaining strength daily. And we now have a bunch of other treatment strategies we can try.

When he started, he was unable to care for himself. Not only was he suffering excessively, but I was drowning in stress: I was caring for him; keeping the household running; keeping up with a demanding career (currently our only option for income); parenting; and worrying constantly about our future. Our life was basically wrecked.

Now we have hope. Something we haven't had for a long time. And an understanding about what is actually happening, which will enable us to continue to find effective treatment.

Aglaée's book is dedicated "to everyone suffering from digestive issues and feeling abandoned by conventional medicine". That's us. But thanks to Aglaée we aren't feeling abandoned anymore~.
