Product Description

The Basys2 board is a circuit design and implementation platform that anyone can use to gain experience building real digital circuits. Built around a Xilinx Spartan-3E Field Programmable Gate Array and a Atmel AT90USB2 USB controller, the Basys2 board provides complete, ready-to-use hardware suitable for hosting circuits ranging from basic logic devices to complex controllers. A large collection of on-board I/O devices and all required FPGA support circuits are included, so countless designs can be created without the need for any other components. Four standard expansion connectors allow designs to grow beyond the Basys2 board using breadboards, user-designed circuit boards, or Pmods (Pmods are inexpensive analog and digital I/O modules that offer A/D & D/A conversion, motor drivers, sensor inputs, and many other features). Signals on the 6-pin connectors are protected against ESD damage and short-circuits, ensuring a long operating life in any environment. The Basys2 board works seamlessly with all versions of the Xilinx ISE tools, including the free WebPack. It ships with a USB cable that provides power and a programming interface, so no other power supplies or programming cables are required.

I bought this board as it was the least expensive of the boards mentioned in the "FPGA Prototyping" books by Pong Chu. I didn't want to try something off the beaten path for my first attempt at learning to work with FPGAs.

I decided to go with a cheap board for programming "blinking lights" projects, and would put the money I saved from not buying the Spartan 3e Starter board towards a Terasic DE0-Nano to experiment with "soft core" processors. So the lack of SDRAM on the Basys2 was not a concern for me.

The board comes with a retracting Micro-USB cable which is used for powering the board, as well as programming. That means one less wire to add to the rat's nest on my desk, which is a plus.

It all sits nicely inside a DVD-sized case with anti-static foam for people who are tight on space. The switches and buttons are decent quality.

Once you outgrow it, you can pass it on to other people who are interested in dabbling in FPGA development.

Overall, a good value. However, I'd like to see a cheaper, smaller version without the I/O connectors since I'm not particularly interested in interfacing with anything.

The board is great but my only drawback was in paying 2x the actual price available direct from Digilent dot com. What is the incentive to pay double the price here? Also you can buy the Basys3 which has integrated USB - UART bridge and more PMODs as well. Basys 3 ( for half the price as here ) offers 15X the logic cells (from 2,160 to 33,280) and the upgrade from multipliers to true DSP slices. It also adds over 26X the amount of RAM.

But if basys2 is what you want and you're willing to pay double the price, then this is a great deal. I repeat - basys2 (same one advertised here) is seventy nine bucks direct from digilent. basys3 is there also at same price (79) and has far more to offer in terms of hardware upgrades. cheers. and my best wished to you all.
