I decided to go with a cheap board for programming "blinking lights" projects, and would put the money I saved from not buying the Spartan 3e Starter board towards a Terasic DE0-Nano to experiment with "soft core" processors. So the lack of SDRAM on the Basys2 was not a concern for me.
The board comes with a retracting Micro-USB cable which is used for powering the board, as well as programming. That means one less wire to add to the rat's nest on my desk, which is a plus.
It all sits nicely inside a DVD-sized case with anti-static foam for people who are tight on space. The switches and buttons are decent quality.
Once you outgrow it, you can pass it on to other people who are interested in dabbling in FPGA development.
Overall, a good value. However, I'd like to see a cheaper, smaller version without the I/O connectors since I'm not particularly interested in interfacing with anything.
But if basys2 is what you want and you're willing to pay double the price, then this is a great deal. I repeat - basys2 (same one advertised here) is seventy nine bucks direct from digilent. basys3 is there also at same price (79) and has far more to offer in terms of hardware upgrades. cheers. and my best wished to you all.
