As a hobbyist, I was growing very dissatisfied with the 40 watt Weller unit. After exhaustive research, I settled on this one and I'm very impressed. The iron is very comfortable and heats up ridiculously quick (700 degrees in about 20 seconds). As other reviewers noted, the temperature controls aren't intuitive but after the first use you realize what their control strategy is and it becomes second nature. The iron cord is nice as well and seems to lay nicely and not interfere in any way with soldering. Cheaper cords always seem to have a weird twist that make you have to reposition your hand constantly to make sure the cord stays out of the way. It's also nice that the power supply and cord are separate from the iron so you can have your base out of the way. I can't speak to the presets or the lock feature since I haven't had a use for them yet.
For those who will be sharing this or are buying this for your kids or beginners (mine are 10 and 14) they couldn't be happier. They too used the Weller and were frustrated by cord, poor quality tips and uneven heating. They both were very happy and impressed by how much better this unit is and how much more they enjoy soldering with it.
The stand is quite nice and seems very well thought out. The cutters work very well but do note that they're not intended to cut harder/thicker wires like those found on header pins as they will dent.
Other reviewers also note that this is an expensive unit but given my poor experience with cheaper irons this was money very well spent. Since it arrived I have not once thought that I paid too much and in fact I feel like it's really a pretty good deal. As Ben Franklin said "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten". Truer words never spoken.

Wish I had known that a "real" soldering iron makes all the difference.
Wish I had known years ago that a "real" soldering iron - with controlled temperature - makes all the difference.I had used a cheap one with big lumpy solder and always had poor results.Thought it was my lack of skills, but it was the lack of a proper tool.Spending a few extra bucks for this is more than wore it.

Coming from a simple "plug it the wall and wait five minutes" single- temp Radio Shack Soldering iron, this is light years ahead. First off, This thing heats up in literally seconds, drastically more convenient than other stations, even faster than the analog Weller WLC-100 I use at work. The lead coming from the base is very flexible and relaxed in no time after unboxing, so you never feel like you're fighting the cord to hold the iron how you want. The iron holder is very sturdy despite being quite light, and is very easy to take apart and clean.
Tip change is tool-less and easy, and the pre-installed chisel tip it comes with has held up very well so far, but I follow Louis Rossman's guide to tip maintenance: wet the tip with fresh solder after almost every joint, and only use the brass wool, never the sponge to clean the iron. You wouldn't put cold water on a 700 degree frying pan would you? No, cause it will warp or crack, just like your soldering iron tip.
Anyway, my only complaint, as someone who does a lot of de- soldering, scrapping, through- hole and SMD re- flowing is that on this digital unit, it's a little cumbersome to change the temperature. Not complicated by any means, but it takes more time than say, a knob would.
As an aside, the bundled clippers are great too. Very prcise, sharp, and comfortable to hold and use.

I ordered the "X-TRONIC" MODEL #4010-XTS - 4000 SERIES" from Amazon and when it came I was disappointed in how it felt and looked. It felt very toyish. The price on the X-Tronic was only 2.00 less than the Hakko so I immediately ordered the Hakko. It has a very solid quality feel and I put it to use today and was impressed. The cable to the iron is nice and flexible with no stiffness. It goes to temperature very quickly and changes just as quickly. The user interface is not what I would call intuitive and the instructions make it seem to be worse than it is. For my use it is easy enough to set the temp . Just hold the enter for a second until the 1st digit starts blinking and scroll up with the up button. When the first digit is set hit the enter button to set the 2nd digit and then go on to the third. It is just like setting a digital watch or other device. 99% of users will not need to know any more than that. When you turn it on it goes to the temperature you last used; a feature I really like. Some have complained that it doesn't idle down when unused but I like knowing it is ready to go as soon as I take the iron out of the holder.
The X-Tronic included a cheap plastic stand that was light and could easily be knocked over. The Hakko stand is all metal and heavy. I do wish they included a few extra tips but I'm going to buy a small conicaal tip and a larger wedge tip. The included 1.6 wedge tip is a good general purpose tip.
For 91 bucks this as a great buy and a quality product.

The Hakko FX-888D is a high quality soldering station.
Easy to use, heats up quickly. Nice temperature control.
The tip is small enough for most projects. Other tips are available.
