If you want to get inside the head of a cyber investigator hell bent on solving interesting cybercrimes, stop reading now and just get this book. And you'll learn a lot about cybercrime along the way. Don't worry if you're not super technical, Mike has done a masterful job of making these mysteries accessible to people without deep technical knowledge. Yet there's enough detail for even career information security folks like me to follow the investigation step by step with Mike.
I read Digital Forensic Diaries on the beach in Bethany, Delaware. I wasn't too sure what to expect, but after the first few pages, I was hooked. What a fun read. It didn't take two pages to realize that this isn't a security book. It's five fascinating crime stories, laced with technical details, crazy people, and suspense.
Each of the five stories starts with Mike getting called in on a new investigation. I won't share any spoilers, but it's like you're working with Mike to figure out what's happened as the details slowly unfold and Mike slowly closes the net. Each story is crazier than the last, and Mike manages to keep the suspense until the very end.
I shared the book with my nephew (13) and my son (18). Both devoured it and then wouldn't shut up about the details of each of the cases. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes mysteries and police procedurals. I dare you to read this book without wanting to switch careers.
