Digital Human: The Fourth Revolution of Humanity Includes Everyone 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 82 ratings

Digital is far-reaching and ubiquitous - everything you know is about to change.

We are living in the fourth age of humanity. First, we became human. Then we became civilized. The third age saw the creation of commerce. Now, we are becoming digital. Technology has changed the way we communicate, trade, and transact, with repercussions extending far beyond our personal spheres.

Digital Human is a visionary roadmap for the future, a timely guide on how to navigate the world of finance as we create the next generation of humanity. It explores the digital evolution's impact and offers clear insights on thriving in this new era. Human and business relationships are evolving, and existing businesses must undergo substantial transformative changes to compete with the smaller, "lighter," and more agile companies that are able to quickly maneuver to match shifting consumer demands. A lack of online presence has become unthinkable, as consumer preferences continue to trend heavily toward online business and transactions—is your company equipped to thrive in this new era?

While there is no definitive guide to this new reality, this insightful resource provides the starting point and roadmap to digital success in the financial services arena, covering aspects such as:

  • Digital is not merely a “bolting on” of technology to produce results faster and cheaper, but a complete rethinking of common business practices and notions of efficiency and customer engagement
  • Rethinking business starts with the customer - new business models are constructed entirely around this single, guiding principle
  • A digital business model is all about connectivity, with front-office apps tied in to both back-office analytics and marketplaces with many players and segments
  • Businesses must open their operations to this marketplace of players through APIs, necessitating a conversion of many core systems
  • Central business and technology systems must change to adapt to new market entrants and new technologies that range from AI for back-office analytics to Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) for global operations

Leaders must rethink their businesses to be fit for the future digital age, and this comprehensive resource shines a spotlight on the key elements to this transformation.

From the Inside Flap

A FINANCIAL EXPERT EXPLORES THE TRANSFORMATIONAL POWER OF THE FOURTH AGE OF HUMANITY

We are in the midst of a revolution of humanity. The impact of the digital revolution, creating the fourth age of humanity, is that we are all connected one-to-one in real time for the first time in history. Digital Human offers a much-needed exploration of how the digital age is affecting human and business relationships and offers guidance that shows how companies of all sizes can adapt to become forward-thinking digital businesses.

Digital Human explores the implications of the digitalisation for humanity, trade, commerce and our future. The mobile network is achieving the goal of eroding boundaries and inclusion of everyone. This digitalisation of our planet is bringing about a major transformation. Everyone on the planet will soon be included in the network and everyone on the planet will get the chance to talk, trade and transact with everyone else in real time.

This book offers insight into a number of intriguing topics that stem from the digitalisation of humanity such as how bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are challenging government and control mechanisms and why the Chinese tech giants are more imaginative than their Western counterparts.

Chris Skinner also explores the rise of the most fundamental innovations in emerging markets and examines the challenge to govern a globalised world when we live in nation states. In addition, Skinner includes the first-ever in-depth English-language case study of Ant Financial and Alipay, the mobile wallet that aims to be used by over two billion humans.

Digital Human explains why the fourth revolution of humanity will include everyone, no matter where they live or how they live.

This is a fascinating subject that Skinner lays out clearly and in an entertaining way. He provides some historical notes, not as a thorough anthropological study, but rather to help the reader understand the arc of evolutionary history with respect to humanity and technological innovation. This is especially important to consider when examining the innovation taking place in the Southern Hemisphere and how quickly financial inclusion can occur and affect change. The view that platform models are the optimal structures to deliver FS in the future is something he has written on before and seems to be playing out. If you have an interest in innovation and the future of financial services, then this book (and his other writings) need to be part of your ongoing education.

Chris does a good job outlining the history of money and what the future of money looks like for the future generations of digital humans. He also goes into other several major themes driving the future of humanity like being connected 24/7 (enabled by mobile), people living longer, man/machine interfaces, space colonization, etc. The book ends with a case study on Ant Financial and interview transcripts with Ant’s leaders and Paytm CEO. These 2 final sections are probably my favorite parts. One star off for the slow start to the book, since recapping history could have been done more succinctly.

This is a great read and makes you realize where we are heading as a society. The internet and AI are changing the way we live and connecting us with so many new people across the planet.
I really liked the Case History at the end of the book and the Jack Ma story and how business in China and India has different challenges. Those of us in the West really need to look into what is going on in these other nations because they could very well overtake us very rapidly...

I was fortunate enough to receive an early copy of Skinner's latest book, Digital Human and totally enjoyed it. His coverage of the impact of digital transformation on banking, communications and ecommerce is excellent. The stories from his travels provide both excellent examples and a perspective that only he can offer. Most of all, I enjoyed his very deep inside look into Ant Financial and Alibaba. A must read for anyone interested in how new technologies will impact humanity.

Quite a mix of compelling and irrelevant content in my opinion. The author extends his discussion of the evolving financial services landscape to include arguable digressions of anthropology and sociology - topics the author does not credibly advance. Most discouraging is his promise of digital’s role in bringing forth cures to social ills such as inequality and poverty as if the human heart plays no role. Any student of history would find these claims fanciful at best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for anyone with the vaguest interest in the future ...

Superb insight into the future of humankind, with a particular emphasis on financial services - and specifically how fintech will serve the changing needs of an ageing western population and help drive down the cost of access to basic services in emerging markets to increase financial inclusion. The author takes us on a journey that includes a brief history of mankind and then brings us on a journey that acknowledges both dystopian and utopian possibilities for the decades to come (e.g. looking at which jobs will be threatened and attractive), leaning towards the latter more optimistic scenario. The most striking point for me was how innovation will be driven by companies in emerging markets (in fact it is already) as they aren't weighed down by the "luxury" of the existing infrastructure in developed markets. Western banks face the ultimate innovator's dilemma in this regard. China is at the cutting edge (with 50x the volume of mobile payments of the US), with Ant Financial (the Alibaba spin out) leading the way (450m users and targeting 2bn by 2025). The 90 page case study on them in the book is mind blowing. Highly recommended for anyone with the vaguest interest in the future of homo sapiens.

Interesting analysis and some good insight in this accessible look at the Digital Revolution that continues at an unceasing pace. The author charts it's origins to show how we got here, and where we are going. A global perspective is taken which is good and you feel by the end well informed, as the topic is holistically explained.
