Doesn't Live Up to Expectations and Other Reviews

I recently purchased Scott Kelby's The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2, in conjunction with Volume 1. Overall, I'm very disappointed with both and will probably return them. I liked the concepts behind them--Kelby talking to you, his friend, while out on a shoot together and telling you quickly (<1 page) how to do something. But the topics are a mishmash and don't really fit together all that well, and the tips in general don't seem to have a specific audience in mind.

What do I mean? The back cover of this books clearly describes it as "Beginner" user level. But many of the tips aren't really what I'd call beginner-level tips. Instead, they're for people who are semi-pro turning pro, or amateurs who have enough disposable income that they've decided to set up their own portrait studio complete with an external flash system just for kicks. Write a book that helps the new professional photographer find their feet in the business world, or write a book for people new to photography, but these are two very different audiences and one book won't work for both groups. Also, realistically--what beginner needs an entire chapter on shooting weddings (complete with tips about bringing a sidekick, a shot list, and a few power bars)? There are a few useful gems throughout, but not enough for me to consider this a worthwhile book.

In fact, for Volume 2, the only people for whom I'd recommend this book would be those who are just getting started in the photography business--or people who understand photography and are trying to decide whether a career in photography is right for them. Otherwise, read the Table of Contents that other reviewers have so kindly posted--and only buy this book if you see what you consider a "must know" tip in the list. But honestly, there are plenty of other photography books out there that are far more useful and practical. My personal favorite is Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide.

Outstanding digital photography book

The digital photography handbook,

This is the most helpful book on digital photography I have seen in a while. Each page of the book has some scenario and a ways to work with is to get the best possible shot. It's also covers many different ways to overcome what ever adverse shooting situation you might be. Kelby Talks about cheap ways to overcome situations. He also talks about more expensive ways to overcome situations. On each subject where he discusses a scenario there are usually multiple photos to show you each effect of each solution will have on the photo. Each subject is covered very well in about two pages. The photography is outstanding and in color.

Kelby covers all types of digital photography from portraiture to landscape, lighting flashes, different types of digital cameras.

Kelby covers using a flash, building a studio from scratch, shooting portraits like a pro, shooting landscapes like a pro, shooting weddings like a pro, shooting travel like a pro, shooting macro like a pro, pro tips for getting photos and more photo recipes to help you get the shot. All of these subject are covered very well.

The book is written in an easy to understand, easy to read and with some humor. Each topic is about one page in length.

I consider myself to me an intermediate photographer and I can say that this is and continue to be very helpful to me. I This is a must for the beginner to intermediate photographer. The book is small enough to carry in your camera equipment bag. This book is packed with information and extremely helpful tips.

Scott Kelby, Digital Photography Book 2, far trailing vol. 1

Volume 1 was eye popping and get me really interested, plus the good review of volume 2 result in getting volume 2. But that was a big mistake. The book begins with the studio setup, which not sure how useful to normal shooters such as myself. And if I am to set up a studio, I would have look for more professional advise or Google rather than rely on one chapter of a book!! There are some duplications as well, such as pano shoots and post processing in Adobe. To be fair to Scott, there are some helpful tips throughout the book, but they are pretty basic and some are common sense. Once you get a better understanding of your camera and relationship of photographic triangle, you can figure it out. I pretty much finish reading the entire book in less than a day, and I did read in detail, too.

I suggest you should get book 1 first, if photography interests you, then you should get something else like Peterson's Understanding Exposure. It explains a lot more in how Aperture, Shutter and ISO setting work with each other to get better photos.

great stuff for the semi-serious photographer

This is really another terrific book and a good follow-on to volume one (a clear five-star). The extraordinary sections on lighting and posing your subjects offset a bit too much on weddings, and a little too much overlap with volume one keeps it from getting five stars, but you DO want both if you want to take your digital photography to the next THREE levels. Just look at p.92 (how to look slimmer in photos) if making your subjects happy with your photos is of value to you.
Just because the advice is practical, don't think it is for beginners; he will not tell you how the camera works, or how to turn it on, but if you ever wondered what your DSLR can do when you do some of the thinking for it, this book (and vol. one!) are for you.
