Review

This book is a real gem for the SLR user...breaking technical language into easy to understand sentences. (Burton Mail, 10th March 2012) An instantly accessible way into the world of DSLRs and is typically breezy and appealingly laid out (Amateur Photographer, 12th May 2012) It is well produce, clear and very easy to follow (Amateur Photographer, November 2012)

I purchased my first DSLR camera about a year ago. Immediately I became eager to learn how to use it beyond the green box auto mode. I found Mark Holmes through a google search on the interest and had taken his beginner workshops learning the basics of aperture and shutter speed, etc. Mark immediately put me at ease with his patience and ability to break down the mechanics of the camera while explaining how to achieve the type of picture I was seeking.

I recently learned that he had written this book and immediately purchased it. It came as no surprise to me that the book was written just as well as his classes. Although I was able to personally skip the first lesson I realized that this book is perfect for photographer working at any level from the most entry level up.

There are tons of pictures referencing the different results that the photographer will achieve as different camera settings are set. I am a very visual learner so these pictures were essential for me. I especially enjoyed the lessons on focus and flash as I personally find flash very challenging. I have already seen improvements in my photos while using my flash since purchasing this book.

Lastly, I really enjoyed the the interactive CD that is included with this book. Again, being very visual I was able to follow along with the exercises and listen while working directly with my camera.

Overall, this book has been a huge resource for me as I continue to seek more knowledge about digital photography. I would recommend this book and any of the Mark Holmes workshops if you are able to attend them in person. He is a fantastic teacher and writer and his knowledge and expertise will benefit anyone working at any level of photography.

Digital SLR Photography for Dummies by Mark Holmes is the perfect learning tool for an aspiring photographer. Having studied privately with Mark as well as taking his group classes I knew that Mark was a great teacher, and his teaching through the written word is just as helpful!

The explanations are easy to understand, and the pictures that demonstrate the techniques are extremely useful. Plus, there is an interactive CD-ROM and online course that really help to solidify all the skills Mark teaches through this guide.

I would recommend this book and online course to anyone looking to grow their skills as a photographer, whether you are a complete beginner or are looking to brush up on certain topics. I will be giving this book as a gift to any aspiring photographer I know!

I can't believe how easy learning is with this book! No turning from page 1 to page 40 and back to page 1 as I had to do with the manual that came with my camera. I've had my camera for some time and just couldn't quite grasp the concept of shutter speeds versus light and all the other technical jargon. Now, with 'Digital SLR For Dummies', I am learning to really use my camera! My photo's have already improved and I'm only half way through the book! I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a DSLR and is only shooting on AUTO or if you're confused about how your camera works. If you're thinking of giving a camera as a gift be sure to include 'Digital SLR For Dummies', the recipient will thank you for it!

I ordered this as new. The price was great!! The book was a new book in that it was just published in 2012. The CD arrived safely and in one piece. The content is just what I was looking for - lots of visuals meaning color pictures. Easy to comprehend. Plus the cd gives you two hours of learning along with the contents of the book. Yes, each camera has it's own manuals but this book gives the generic learning so you can then pick up any camera and know what your doing. Covers all those subjects like exposure, white balance, aperture, lenses, even how to capture the shot. Great for beginner and intermediate learners. I would say this book needs to be in everyone's library. I look forward to reading this book.

I am just getting started with photography and not a good reader (more visual) so this was prefect for me. The cd took me step by step and then had me practice what I just learn before going on to the next chapter. The teaching made since to me because it showed me what to use to get the picture I might want to take and then suggested using different camera modes and angles. Very easy and friendly, not over whelming.
