The display on the upgraded model does seem to have been improved, which makes it much easier to use. I have included pictures of the two thermometers side-by-side. The first pic is with the backlights lit on both. I had to take the picture in the dark because the reflection of the overhead lights didn't give a good representation. The new one is on the left. It is a bit easier to read when lit. The two big improvements are that the backlight stays on much longer, and after it shuts off the display is still fairly readable WITHOUT having to press any buttons. (On the old one I had to press a button to "wake it up", and on doing so as often as not would end up inadvertently changing to Celsius or changing the meat type or something). I would say that with the display improvements this is now a useful thermometer.
The improved display and the proactive customer service certainly deserve another star each, so I am changing my rating to 4-stars. If they were to address the other design issues I mentioned previously, it would certainly be a 5-star unit (those issues ARE still present on the new model).
I was happy when I first got it. The size is nice. The magnet is a great idea, and it's nice and strong.
Then I used it a few times.
First off, the jack the probe plugs into isn't great. It felt quite loose at first, until I decided it wasn't seated properly. It took a lot of wiggling and WAY too much force to get it securely plugged in, but it has been quite secure ever since.
When you turn it on, the units always default to Celsius. Since I live in the US, I happen to use Fahrenheit, so I have to switch it EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now, I realize that most of the world uses Celsius, and here in the US we're kinda sticks in the mud for not using the much more logical metric system- but it is what it is, and if you use Celsius, you ALWAYS use Celsius, and if you use Fahrenheit, you ALWAYS use Fahrenheit.
There should be a switch to select units permanently instead of the stupid switch to select temp or timer. Who needs a timer? I have a timer on my stove. I have a timer on my microwave. I have unlimited timers on my phone, and so do you. A units switch makes far more sense, but instead I have a timer I will never use.
Then there is the display. The backlight stays on just long enough for the temperature to stabilize once you put the probe in a piece of meat, then conveniently shuts off lol. The display IS still on, and if the angle is just right you can read it, but in bright light (like if you're grilling) forget it! I'd be happy to sacrifice battery life for the option to keep the backlight on.
There's a bunch of selections for meat types and doneness, and that's fine- it always gives you the probe temp- but if you don't select one, it eventually starts incessantly beeping until you do. I can see the convenience of having that feature, because you may not know off the top of your head what the temp for lamb is- but don't INSIST that I choose! Annoying.
The cord on the probe is a bit of a pain because it tends to kink- but that may be the nature of temperature probes, so I don't count that against the unit.
So, I went to use it tonight. Turn it on, change to Fahrenheit, fight with the cord, and stick it to the stove. I start cooking my salmon, and BEEP BEEP BEEP...I didn't confirm my meat choice, so I have to deal with that while the clock is ticking on my expensive fish. Ok, confirm, insert the probe... and the damn display backlight shuts off! Grrrrr!
I suppose I'll keep it, because I hate waste, but I was VERY close to chucking the damn thing.
So make your choice, but I would never buy this thing again.

It beeps loudly and clearly when your meat is ready.
The device automatically turns off after 10 minutes to preserve battery life. So there is no need to turn it off and off yourself. Saving you the hassle.
You can stick the probe into a griddle, panini press, and a grill with no issues. The wire that is on the probe has a great heat resistant coating. Making it hella useful.
The device does take 2 seconds to update but there is no need for the update interval to be short as it is definitely preferably to put this into the meat as it cooks anyway. Even then the update time isn't really a problem.
Because this is just a long probe on a wire, it is extremely easy to clean. If you use one of those short thermometers it can be a nightmare to clean because you often get the oil over the LCD screen and potentially short the device (A Kizen I used got shorted due to this very reason.) but on this device since its on a long wired probe its impossible to get grease on it.
IT HAS MAGNETS. I like magnets, do you?
I won't hesitate to offer my complaints on a product and if you see any of my others reviews, I make that very clear. This product however is just plainly designed well. I've used multiple thermometers and this one is the cheapest and most feature rich one I have to buy yet. Highly recommended. 10/10
