Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Velvet Assassin

As World War II is waged outside of a lonely hospital window, it also plays out inside the mind of Violette Summer. While in a coma, the British intelligence agent relives the horrors she experienced while sabotaging the Nazi regime.

Inspired by real-life WWII heroine Violette Szabo, Velvet Assassin reveals the revulsions of war that are never spoken aloud. Through third person game play, sneak up on enemies and pull the pins from their belted grenades. Infiltrate a Nazi camp and slip cyanide to your own men before the Germans make them talk. Slink through the shadows to finish off your unsuspecting enemies with a single, perfectly aimed shot.

Through Violette's fever dreams, experience what she experienced. Walk where she walked. Kill those she killed.

  • Lure your enemy by whistle to a puddle of gasoline right before you ignite it or turn off their radio to bring them a step closer to the cold reach of Violette's silent knife.
  • Explore surreal, dreamlike settings that are modeled after actual World War II locations.
  • Experience the unimaginable horrors of stealthaction warfare in the shadows of Nazi-controlled Europe.
  • Change Violette's attributes to suit your playing style, whether it is increased stealth, more strength, or better weapon handling.

I was curious about this game, since it's release. When I got the opportunity to pick it up...I was pretty amazed. The Physx graphics are good. Gameplay has a bit of a learning curve, but once you figure out the moves, etc...this game is a decent challenge and worth buying. the story was based on a real life WWII British assassin. For the price...the gameplay is fun!

I bought and played this game about two years ago, and frankly, I was not expecting much, recalling some very mediocre magazine reviews from when it was released. But because it was priced so low, I decided to try it, since I am a stealth game fanatic, with the "Thief" games being my favorites. That said, I enjoyed this game very much, in spite of it playing nothing like "Thief". The one very big drawback to me was that "Velvet Assassin" is a very linear game, constraining you to a fairly narrow path all the way through. There are some areas that allow more freedom, and those areas were refreshing, but there were too few of them.

In spite of that negative however, I very much enjoyed playing "Velvet Assassin", and I finished it in about a week of playing every night. While not a super-long game, it was far from being a short game. It was actually what I would call "just the right length". The story, while nothing special, was actually quite good, and managed to hold my interest the entire way through. And although the game was linear, and your options usually somewhat limited, it played well enough that I really didn't mind any of that. The sneaking was fun, as were the kills I had to do when my sneaking attempts failed. I did have a lot of trial-and-error instances while playing, and though they could be frustrating, replaying the same sections multiple times didn't bother me as much as in most other games. Checkpoint saves are used, and for the most part (there were exceptions) I had no problem with their spacing, even though I'd far prefer a save anywhere system.

The graphics were surprisingly beautiful for a game this old.

I really tried to get into this, because I like stealth games, but something about it was just... boring. I don't know if it was the slow story development or locations, but I walked away from this without finishing, and that's very rare.

The Good: Beautiful visuals, nice WWII setting

The Bad: Boring story, broken stealth mechanics, technical flaws

I have really given this game some time and I tried to forgive it. I rented this on Xbox 360 when it first came out and gave up after the second level. I bought this as a cheap Steam sale about a year ago and have just had it sitting on my HDD since then. I have gone back here and there to try to beat or continue this game. I just can't do it and have finally given up. After two years of giving this game a chance I doubt it will become better over time. The paper-thin story, poor stealth mechanics, and technical flaws just bring this promising game down.

You play as a British spy infiltrating Germany during World War II and other occupied territories for...I don't know really. The story is presented in flashbacks that don't really explain much other than why Violet is at that current location. You have various goals you have to complete, but there are enemies in between that you have to kill off or avoid. A stealth game has to have great stealth mechanics like sneaking, killing, and gadgets which Velvet fails in every category. First off, she moves way to slow when crouching. You can never catch up to enemies who are walking because they just leave her in the dust. This is extremely difficult when you are trying to quickly kill someone before you are spotted. The kill moves are pretty cool, but you have to be in the exact position the game needs you to be before you can trigger it. You also have to be extremely close which is ridiculous. This isn't Splinter Cell where you can trigger the kill at a reasonable distance.

You get a few items to help you kill these Nazis.

It was a interesting idea. I liked the setting and the female protagonist, but Tenchu does a better job at being a stealth game. The controls feel clunky and combat boring. There is some nice NSFW mods for the game though if your into that. Other than that it is a average game, I just rather play Tenchu.

It is fully compatible with 360 controllers and you might need to do some trouble shooting to get the game working. It is a little on the old side.
