And it’s the fifth book in Lynne Connolly’s historical romance series, The Emperors of London! This can definitely be read as a standalone, but if you want the juicy behind the scene information of what has been found and collected, since it is a somewhat mystery ongoing series with action and call for danger, then do read the first books but then of course you absolutely don’t have to for this book.
If you know me, I absolutely adore childhood friends to lovers stories and this is one of them that has a touch of something different and sweet. Both the hero and heroine has known each other their whole lives but there’s a secret that no one knows about, her birth is tied to the treacherous Jacobites. The only reason why Marcus was sent away in the first place because she could endanger his life, or that she’s royalty. Of course it turned the other way when she’s attacked and he takes charge to bring her to safety.
I loved that this book was packed with lots of information and action. There are lots of charters that you’ll meet along the way, some old and familiar if you’ve been catching up with the series from the beginning but also new characters waiting for their own adventure.
Marcus is definitely a true hero in every sense. He’s strong and have a heart of a protector, especially when it comes to protecting those he love. Viola was also amazing and is surprisingly level headed under stress and tension, most of the time, which was great because I wouldn’t want a dysfunctional heroine being dragged about England over the turn of events to her life.
I adore tension in romances and super love them even more between friends to lovers stories because you just can’t help but want them to just get it rolling after all those times. I thought they were great together, although it start to get repetitive (the sex scenes), I still enjoyed it.
As many of the books before this one, there’s this loose end to the story. Though Marcus and Viola’s romance ended and just beginning, the mystery over the whole series is still ongoing into the next book, with added new information of course.
Lynne Connolly is amazing and her writing just grabs you so I do recommend this story and really, any of her stories. She also does paranormal you know.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was one of, if not my favorite, entry in the Emperors of London series. Viola is the daughter of the land manager for the Marquess of Strenshall. The Marquess and his son, Marcus, come to the estate to check on her father after he suffers an accident. Viola finds herself remembering the feelings she had for Marcus for years as they grew up together until Marcus turned 9. Viola acts as hostess for the Marquess and after staying overnight, finds that her father was attacked at their home. Marcus springs into action and works to bring Viola to safety. They soon find themselves on the road to London on the public stage as a married couple. Viola has decided she will likely remain a spinster and wants to seize her opportunity to experience passion with Marcus. Proving his status as a gentleman, Marcus preserves Viola's choices but allows her her first taste of passion. Upon reaching London, Marcus and Viola have to decide if their relationship is worth fighting for; Viola's birth is not quite what it appears. A daughter of the Old Pretender and his Italian wife, Viola finds herself and Marcus in danger. Julius makes an appearance and continues to tantalize readers and make me impatient for his book. There was also an interesting development with Alconbury, the heir to the Emperor's worst enemy, the Dankworth family. I loved Marcus as a hero, he is reserved and chivalrous. Viola is more tempestuous, but exactly what Marcus needs to balance him. Connolly does a great job writing an engaging story of childhood friends to lovers with political intrigue thrown in the mix. I'm looking forward to the next title in the series.

I can't believe that this book has been in my TBR folder for 2 years. I recently read one of Ms Connolly's newer books and decided to go back. This story sounded good, in that the H compromised the h and was pushed into marrying her. In fact, it wasn't really like that. The h is supposedly the daughter of the H's father's steward. She and the H grew up together until they were separated when the h was 9 yo. The H will become the Marquess one day and she wasn't good enough. She did still grow up with the H's sisters and received lessons with them. In the present, the H comes with his father to the estate where the h lives and their connection begins again. The h's secret background is now an issue and she's in danger so the H ends up trying to get her away. This leads to them travelling on their own and for the H to state that they are married when they stay at various inns. This goes on until they do end up married just after the middle of the book. The plot against the h makes up the rest of the story with a number of sex scenes along the way. For me something was lacking in this book. Not for the first time with this author, I feel like the story lost momentum and became difficult to finish. Anyway it's a pleasant enough read.

This is a stand alone book of the emperors of London series. The love that develops and grows between Marcus and Viola is sweet. They have known each other since childhood and were close. With age that pull, affection, etc has developed and increased. He marries her to protect her, but finds there's more to their relationship other than protection. The more books I read of this series, the more I feel like reading the actual history of that era!
Connolly is an excellent writer!

This was a good story, however, the explicit sex scenes were a bit too much. Would have been better if they were toned down.

It is my second book in this series, I will probably read them all, but it is the blurb appealing me the most which will decide of the order I will select them.
The author was able to create one more new very interesting duet of characters.
Each one with its strength and its flaws, with strong personalities enhanced and counterbalanced by another.
Violet is a lost daughter of an exiled king, but she was raised far from a royal court, she thought her parentage a tale, believing she is the daughter of a steward. Until her life is threatened and she must run to save herself with her long time crush.
Marcus is a man who always followed the rules, he is never
carried away, until he is around Violet. They were friends as kids but their parents chose a different path for each of them. As a heir, Marcus must not play with the daughter of a land stewart, even if he is a cousin. But when Violet’s life becomes at stake, he must follow his impulse and make a choice, a choice which could be devastating.
I loved there was few angst, only moments of miscommunication but they are smart enough to overcome them and talk about their feeling even if they do not spell immediately the big word with a capital L.
It is also nice to see again the characters from the previous books. It is like seeing again old friends.
I can only recommend this awesome series.
