Editorial Reviews

Bandleader/trumpeter Steven Bernstein has put in time with quasi-bohemian ensembles like the Lounge Lizards and Spanish Fly. On his Sex Mob's debut, Bernstein chooses irreverent covers of songs like "Goldfinger," "House of the Rising Sun," and even the "Macarena." While there are some avant- garde sounds included here, much of Din Of Inequity is in the tradition of classic jazz and showcases the chops of Bernstein (on slide trumpet) and his tag-team partner, altoist Briggan Krauss. Anchored by the rhythm section of Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums), Bernstein and Krauss stomp and wail all over these compositions. Not only that, Bernstein also revives the works of Duke Ellington and Prince. Guests include keyboardist John Medeski and guitarist Adam Levy. A very well-rounded jazz recording. --Mitch Myers

Review

Din of Inequity has a thoroughly different character than most jazz records: it leaps out at you, with a shockingly hot sound. The trumpet solos crackle like the sound of ripping newspapers; the drums are crisp cracks, not muffled thuds. -- New York Times

Although I think nothing beats a Sex Mob live performance, this is probably my favorite studio release by them. Too bad they perform so rarely these days.

Take Dixieland Style, add some mildly avant-guarde loft shadings, and apply them to popular tunes, and you get Sex Mob.

Anyone that enjoys Medeski Martin and Wood or DJ logic will enjoy this band. Like those two, Sex Mob is jazz 100%. But like modern, non-classisist jazz, Mob's music is imformed by a funk bounce and a rock attitude. Medeski has worked with these boys, who perfectly mine the unexplored possibilities presented by 1960s avant gaurde and soul jazz.

Unlike their contempararies, Sex Mob does not emphasisze electronics or 1970s Miles Davis effects and amplifacation. Their sound is more organic then most of today's cutting edge New York Jazzbos.

But this is terrific music, for straight jazz fans, rockers with a bent, or lovers of great tunes.

Original, raw, witty, groovy. Tons of fun for everyone.

Loud, brassy, experimental jazz with a sense of soul and a sense of humor. I listen to this driving with the windows down on a dark night or a sunny day. This is not jazz for contemplation or jazz for math majors (both of which have their place.) This is jazz for Saturday night after you just got paid.

Picking up this CD on the whim of an interview with drummer Kenny Wolleson, I was hoping some killer jazz, with some great drumming. I mean, Come on! It's jazz! It's all about the soloing!

New doors were opened up to me, musically speaking. Although pretty true to form of a traditional jazz makeup, the styles strayed sometimes a little from standard, and sometimes a lot. A lot of times, the tunes were backed up with a straight ahead rock beat. Which leads me to Wolleson's performance. For the most part, he laid down a solid groove, and he would just sit on it forever! Good example: "Sign o' the times", the Prince cover. Wolleson came in with a slow groove, and just kept it going, sparingly adding any licks or fills. When he had to sound huger, not louder, but huger, he did so very tastefully.

The best song, for me anyway, is the sixth track "Been it". Wolleson again is laying down a simple 2-4 groove. But, mix that with what the rest of the band is doing, and you all of a sudden realize that this is the perfect groove. Each member's solos throughout the album are very appropriate. Steven Bernstein's slide trumpet is a peculiar instrument, but he makes it work well. Briggan Krauss's solo in "House of Briggan" is extremely fast; Kenny G, eat it.

The McCartney cover "Live and Let Die" as the last track was a great way to round out an album. This track, for me, always signaled a sort of end to things. This cover being the last was a great display of personality. It was almost emotional, but in a more upbeat way. I personally like how there is faint laughter heard in the background upon completion of the song.

Great debut from a great band.

This disc was my introduction to the Sex Mob. It's killer, with lots of greasy horns and some very nice electric guitar work, too. Nice combo. A few of the songs get brassy, which is not to my taste, but it's worth getting through those moments. At a price of 1 yen, I bought another copy for a friend. What a deal!
