This book gives contains about 200 recipes that will feed 4, usually about $5 for the meal. There are hints for grocery shopping and meal planning and step by step directions for making food ahead.

Each recipe has frugal facts, some are: the kids love this and others have hints on how to slice peaches and freeze them when they are on sale for 3 pounds for $1.50 or less. Each recipe has the cost of every ingredient. To achieve the low price, dried beans are used, with a note that canned beans will be more expensive. Sales, using coupons and stocking up are the key to keeping the price low.
Included is a staples list, some of which you make yourself - homemade hamburger buns, pizza sauce, salsa. Then there is the list of what you should have in your freezer, refrigerator, pantry, and supply inventory such as foil and freezer containers. A detailed index is included, as well as some online resources.

Breakfast recipes include; cereals, egg dishes, with several that can be fixed the night before, pancakes, waffles, tacos and sandwiches. There are instructions for freezing, so they can be grabbed `on the go'. Lunches are for at home and to carry out: sandwiches, wraps, quesadillas, soups, pasta and garden salads, side salads and side dishes, there are also some snacks and smoothies.

Many have variations on eggs, tuna fish and chicken and might seem repetitive, but they do give variety and make use of inexpensive ingredients. There are some good ideas in here to make meals on a budget.

My family gets stuck in the cold cereal and sandwich rut fairly easily. This cookbook presents some great alternatives. And everything I have tried has been delicious. All of the recipes feature fresh-made ingredients - no cream of anything soup or bottled dressings. Plus, this book features not only recipes, but helpful money and time-saving tips.

I've bookmarked many a recipe in The $5 Dinner Mom Breakfast and Lunch Cookbook as there are so MANY yummy sounding recipes waiting for me to try. And every recipe is inexpensive as author Erin Chase keeps her promise of keeping everything under $5 per meal. You read it: per meal. Breakfasts and lunches typically run less than this amount. Here are some examples:

BREAKFAST
Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal served with yogurt, milk or cream plus a hard boiled egg: $1.99
Chocolate Chip Raspberry Pancakes, syrup and fresh fruit: $3.20
Ham and Cheese Omelet with Pumpkin Smoothies: $4.33

LUNCH
Baked Parmesan Chicken Fingers, Marinara Sauce, Spinach "Green" Smoothies: $4.99
Swiss BLT Melts with fresh fruit: $3.52
Cincinnati-Style Chili, spaghetti and fresh fruit: $3.82

There is a nice selection of salads, side dishes, smoothies and snack recipes rounding out this cookbook.

Overall, the prices seem within range and this book will help guide you to a trimmer food budget thanks to Chases' excellent recipes, grocery tips and commonsense.

Highly recommend.

I love this book. I'm always looking for new ideas for breakfast and lunch, and this book is full of them. I have liked most of them that I have tried. At times she uses a bit more sugar or oil than I would use, but I usually just modify the recipe to my liking. I love that it gives me so many ideas. I love her overnight granola. Best granola ever and super easy - no stirring just bake 10 minutes and leave it in the oven overnight. Turns out nice and crisp in the morning. I also like a lot of the bars that she makes, and that she started me making and freezing some of those items to have a quick breakfast ready to go.

I have seen many references to this book, and finally purchased it. There isn't anything exotic or complicated here, but there are plenty of good ideas for frugal and tasty food. This book would be good for a beginner or more advanced cook, and it gives many money saving ideas along with recipes. We have enjoyed quite a few of them already. Check out the author's blog to get an idea of what types of recipes are here. I have subscribed to the blog for a couple of years, and was excited to see this second cookbook that she has written.

I got this cookbook today and it has a nice variety of recipes. I've already made the lemon-blueberry muffins. They were easy to make and turned out great. All the recipes I've looked at seem to have simple, economical ingredients and are fast to prepare just as promised. There are only about 10 pictures in the middle of the book, but that's not a big deal and helps to keep the cost down. My disappointments are in the fact that my family hates oatmeal and I have a kid allergic to eggs. Those two problems eliminate a lot of the breakfast recipes--not the author's fault of course, just not great for me. And you're not going to reach the listed price in the recipes unless you coupon and bargain shop and have a garden and a deep freezer. The recipes are still economical and many would probably still fall under $5, but don't get your hopes up too high. All in all, it's a good value.

There are so many awesome and easy recipes in the book! It helps me to be a little more creative when it comes to weekday breakfasts instead of just relying on cold cereal and frozen waffles. And many of the lunch recipes can be used for dinner, too. Creative, tasty, nutritious, AND with an eye toward keeping costs down. I highly recommend this cookbook!
