This program is probably the best I've tried and far outshines the 30 Day Gourmet recipe software available at their web site. It also seems to provide tastier recipes than 30 Day Gourmet's BIG Book of Freezer Cooking as the recipes from this cooking program taste less freezer like and more gourmet. It's all a matter of taste I guess.
Update: July 11, 2011: Today was spent in the kitchen trying some of the recipes from this cookbook. All the recipes were quick and easy to prepare. There was a minimum of ingredients and preparation involved for each recipe making preparation fast. I made Creamed Corn, Bacon Green Beans, Twice-Baked Potatoes and Glazed Carrots. All the recipes made adequate quantities except for the Creamed Corn. Next time I'll quadruple the recipe so there will be plenty to go round. I took a cook's taste of each recipe and they all were very tasty and didn't taste of freezer food. They did not taste too bland either.
Before the cooking session I printed out the recipes. The recipes were printed on cute recipe cards. They were cute but the type was a bit small for my senior citizen eyes to read.
Still happy with this program and am glad to have found an alternative to the other freezer recipes I was using.
Not all the recipes are freezer friendly so don't be fooled into thinking this CD will contain only freezer recipes. There are recipes you can prepare to serve immediately. It seems the side dishes mainly fall into this category.
The CD does offer a wide variety of recipes that offer a bit of spice. Not all freezer recipes do this such as the 30 Day Gourmet recipe collection which depends mainly on bland freezer stable ingredients. See: The Freezer Cooking Manual from 30 Day Gourmet: A Month of Meals Made Easy The 30 Day Meals In One Day recipes have their faults too. You will find a lot of recipes depending on bacon or barbecue. If you like bacon or barbecue recipes you'll love the 30 Meals In One Day recipe collection.
Last night I did prepare the Bacon Green Beans recipe from this software recipe, which is freezer friendly, and my husband lapped up the green beans. I can hope the other recipes will be just as tasty.
Of note the 30 Meals In One Day recipe collection offers several tuna recipes that are freezer friendly and frugal too. Tuna is almost always one of the most frugal proteins you can use in cooking unless you are using beans.
I am running this software on a T60 ThinkPad using Windows XP. The program loads quickly and seems to have no problems with this operating system.
I will update this review in a couple weeks after trying a few more recipes.
For now I highly recommend this program based on ease of use and the variety of spiced up recipes.
I've also created/added some of my own favorites. I make spring rolls (cellophane wrapped ones) with a peanut sauce. I easily entered the ingredients for both of these recipes.
Why I didn't give it 5 stars: I wish that the program would provide nutrition information. That's the only flaw I see. Since the software knows the exact quantities of each ingredient, it would be great to have a nutrition summary. But there are many free sites out there that you can plug the info into and get the nutrition info if you desire.
Well, with the current economy all the stores in my area have either gone out of business, or no longer allow the customer to "make their own meals" (they want to do it for you). This program gives me the power back! I love the labels...(one of the reasons I liked going to the stores was the professional labels.) You can even save on labels by deciding which ones to print on...so if you didn't use the whole sheet today...you just tell the program which labels you already used so it will print on the available labels. LOVE IT!
This also prints out your recipes in a professional manner on little cards. Great when a friend asks for the recipe! It even gives the credit to the author even if it was from another book. It is super simple to add your own recipes from other sources.
The program is also visually pleasing and easy to use. (I tried another program from another Make ahead meal source...It looked like a spreadsheet. Yuck!)
All in all this program was WELL WORTH the money! This is the best $35 I have ever spent! I am excited to get back into my kitchen! My only problem is that my freezer is packed full...and I have to wait for my family to eat some more of the meals before I can get cooking again! (I also saved a lot of money shopping "loss leaders"...eggs were $1.49 for 18 the other day...so I made a ton of breakfast things that will be great to have on the weekends when my family is all home.)
