About the Author

Following two years in the US Navy, Michael Oard earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in atmospheric science from the University of Washington. He was a research meteorologist for six years at the University of Washington and published several research articles in journals an technical monographs of the American Meteorological Society. Mr Oard later joined the National Weather Service as a weather forecaster. He retired in 2011 after 30 years of service and does full time research, writing and speaking in creationist earth science. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

A Refreshingly Different View of Dinosaurs and their place in Earth and Human History.

It's nice to read a book that reveals ''All'' the scientific evidences revealed by Dinosaur Fossils - And Not just the evidences that supposidly supports the ''Evolutionary'' or ''Old Earth''[Deep Time] viewpoint of earth history. The book dispells many of the so called ''SCIENTIFIC FACTS'' the evolutionary establishment has crammed down the general public's throat for the last 150 years. The first so called fact that is proven wrong is that all fossils[dinosaurs included] have been turned compleatly to stone - unpetrified bones of dinosaurs and other verterabate animals have been discovered in the permafrost of the artic and antartic regions of the earth. Also many of the dinosaur fossils found in the warmer regions have been discovered to be only partialy petrified - the outside of bone as well as the airspaces within the bone have been saturated with minerals - but the hard ''organic'' bone tissue that is composed of calcium ,phosphurus, and collagen fibers are STILL present in the ''FOSSIL'' BONE![in rare cases soft tissue in the bone marrow !] The second so called fact that is disproven is the belief that the Dinosaur Fossils are between 65 million to 225 million years old [The end of the Cretacious period back to the later half of Triassic period].The evolutionist scientists have always insisted that Dinosaur Fossils cannot be ''carbon 14 tested'' because of the lack of ''organic tissue'' and'' advanced age'' millions of years age of the bone[carbon 14 looses all it's radioactivity in less than 100 thousand years]. Scientists of the Creationist mindset have actually had Dinosaur Fossils from the Triassic,Jurassic and Creatacious periods tested for carbon 14 and discovered the fossils to 20 to 40 thousand years old! Creation Wins! Evolution Looses!

Everyone loves dinosaurs

Evolutionists frequently argue that the presence of dinosaur tracks, nests, eggs and other biological markers in the middle of diluvial strata prove that these strata could not have been laid down in the Flood, since the Flood would have destroyed life quickly and not left such traces. Even some prominent Creationist spokesmen have been intimidated by these claims and resorted to unconvincing Flood models which involve impossibly large depths of sediment being deposited after the Flood.

In this book Michael Oard takes a careful look at the evidence. He shows that much of what is presented as hard fact is in reality interpretation. For example, the alleged 'young dinosaurs' associated with a nest could have been embryos from smashed eggs. Supposed clutches of hatched eggs might in reality have been laid in haste and scavenged. Abundant 'gastroliths' (stones ingested by dinosaurs to aid digestion) might simply be stones polished smooth by water transport (rather likely, considering they are rarely found with dinosaur remains!). He also corrects misconceptions about the Flood. We should not imagine a relentlessly rising water level. The Genesis account, and geological investigation, point to great seismic unheavals in the earth's crust which would have resulted in a complex pattern of flooding with areas deluged, drained, then reflooded, perhaps multiple times. These briefly exposed flood sediments would have been open to surviving animals (including dinosaurs), perhaps running across them in panicking herds, perhaps scavenging eggs laid in haste by stressed animals. Dr Oard shows that in many respects this type of interpretation fits the data better than conventional millions-of-years explanations.

The BEDS hypothesis (BEDS = Briefly Exposed Diluvial Sediments) is new, and as the author says there is much work to be done and some of his interpretations may be modified or even abandoned as new data comes in. But the book is an excellent start to a new and exciting area of research.

Ambiguous title, but incredible content

When I began reading this, I thought it would be just another book on dinosaurs. And because I had read author Mike Oard's technical articles, I feared that the tone would be somewhat pedantic. But I wanted to learn whatever I could, so I began the task of reading it. I soon found that my fears were entirely unfounded. I finished the whole book in a week, compelled by the accurate, well-reasoned, very well-researched and eye-opening information on dinosaur fossils.
Oard knows his stuff. No other dinosaur book with which I am familiar compiles and organizes so much diverse and up-to-date dinosaur fossil information. Each chapter presents a dinosaur mystery,like why egg "nests" were buried in what became rock formations with no vegetation, or why billions of dinosaur tracks were deposited onto perfectly flat supposedly desert sands.
Following the clues was like reading an extended episode of CSI, only this mystery was real. It all pointed to Chapter 8. That's where the mysteries were solved, with a little help from biblical history. Fully referenced, with helpful appendices and full-color illustrations and photographs throughout, Dinosaur Challenges and Mysteries (which might have instead been titled, "Dinosaur Mysteries Solved")has become the most treasured of my dozen or so dinosaur books.

Credible Model

Although trained in meteorology, Michael Oard is a generalist who is well-read on the broader origins debate. This servers him well as he presents a convincing hypothesis to a fascinating feature of the preserved dinosaur record. Although it takes a few rabbit trails along the way, the book is focused on the dinosaur track ways and "nesting sites." These have long been presented as a challenge for creationists to explain since these features are preserved in upper sedimentary layers. How could dinosaurs be nesting, scavenging, and walking around in the middle of the Genesis Flood? Oard turns the tables by showing how the details of these sites are actually a much bigger problem for the mainstream geologists. Then he presents a compelling hypothesis that explains how these features could have reasonably have happened during a global flood.
