This is your standard Direct TV remote, except this version has both IR and RF capabilities. In certain instances, you may need IR (Infrared) and RF (Radio Frequency) remotes. My situation was that I have a Direct TV HD-DVR (HR24-200) and a Standard HD receiver (H21-200) in the same room- one top of the other, actually- and using one remote for one device (like for changing the channels) would change the channel on the other device.
I, of course, didn't realize this when the Direct TV technician came in and set up this all up, and since the wife and I have our own remotes, the bottom line was I needed an RF capable remote for me, so that I could operate each device separately also.
This remote did the trick...however one big thing to realize: The remote I received was already in IR mode. I thought it was broken, but through a little digging on the Direct TV technical site, I found how you can change the remote to "RF" mode. Here are the steps:
1. make sure "slider" on top is set to dtv.
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
3. enter 0 0 0 0 1
4. press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
5. enter 9 6 1
6. press CH UP
7. enter the last 6 digits of the Receiver ID# (RID), found on a sticker in the access card compartment
8. press SELECT
The remote came with absolutely NO directions, and I almost rated it 4 stars as a result. Outside of that annoying little omission, it works fine. Hopefully it'll last, too.
My husband "setup" the remote when it arrived and he said he followed the prompts that popped up on the screen when he tried to use the remote for the first time but it didn't work (the volume control works, but not the DirecTV functions) but here's what I did and the remote works now:
1. Set to dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9-6-1
4. press CH UP
5. enter the LAST 6 digits of the receiver ID #
6. press SELECT (now read below for the next step!)
Once this is done, the remote is set to RF, but now you have to use the buttons on the receiver to go into setup menu and select RF. If you don't make sure both the remote and receiver are set to the same (either IR or RF) then they won't work together.
I contacted the seller and after a few email exchanges, they tell me they have reversed the sale and initiated a refund. I don't think you can ask for any more than that. I would buy from the seller again, but I would contact them first to make sure that what I was buying would meet my needs - for both our sakes.

Standard old style remote which is getting harder to find. Four stars not five because it can be tricky programming it for both IR and RF.Published 8 months ago by JDS
Works great! Make sure you want the RF controller - I love RF because you don't have to have a direct line of sight to the box.Published 10 months ago by Big Daddy
I returned this because I could not get it programmed properly. I programed one supplied by a different vendor last week in 5 minutes so I don't think it was my fault I had... Read morePublished 10 months ago by patriot
