This certainly would not be a survival retreat that is defensible or that would provide protection from any major survival hazards unless you went way beyond the scope of this book. This is more the minimalist style of living guide than a design for anything that would help you survive a major event

The book is one man's story of how he was able to live an independent life at minimum cost. It is not a step-by-step manual. There are a lot of details that would have to be researched before you could follow in his steps. This would be necessary anyway, as your circumstances would likely be somewhat different than the authors. Although the author says there is a lot of work involved, I wish he had given more details on, for example, how many hours a day it takes to run a small farm. Also not discussed it's that it takes some money to buy fuel for a generator, supplies, etc. What budget was the author able to live on?

Although I wished for more details, the book gives a good overview of setting up an independent and simple lifestyle. Most importantly, it serves as an inspiration that it's still possible to do so in our modern world.
