But the drawback with a shop vac, is that it can only really suck up the macro particulates and loose dirt in a shag carpet, but it really can't get it properly cleaned. So back in 2012, we bought a Dirt Devil Royal Upright vacuum. The vacuum did a pretty good job of cleaning the carpet, especially since we have pets that shed a lot of fur onto the carpet! However, if you twisted the vacuum too much trying to turn it around, it would whistle out of the bag less collector connection, annoying. And even more annoying, is the fact that it blows the exhaust forward, and because the vacuum has so much power, it would literally blow everything off of our refrigerator, which was super annoying!
INITIAL THOUGHTS: So finally, after 30 years, I think I got a vacuum, that is worth of going up, against the 80's Hoover that I adored and loved. The vacuum comes packaged well in its box. Assembly is really simple, and you really only need the manual, if you've never put a vacuum cleaner together before. However, the manual is useful, for learning how to take the bag less collector off the machine, how to empty it, and get access to the filters. I wouldn't necessarily say that the quality feels the same grade as the 80's Hoover, nothing is made as well as things were back in the day. However, I would say, that it is made better then any of the 50 dollar vacuums!
I love the metal extension pieces, very nice, and I also love the easy grip handle up at the top, as well as the on/off switch for the powered floor tool. I don't like how stiff the flex hose is, however, the handle is designed to rotate on it, so its not too big of a deal. The metal shaft where the powered floor tool is, also allows for 45 degree rotation left or right.
The Vacuum: I really love the cannister vac, its light weight, even though the motor is 15-AMPS. Its easy to move around on its caster wheels. I had to lube those with WD-40 BTW to get rid of the squeak. The unit uses a nice retractable cord, that can be operated by a push of a button, but I really think the unit could use a longer cord to be honest with you. The collector is easy to remove and install via a pull of a lever. And the filters are easy to get access to. The unit also comes with a clean out port on the bottom, incase you clog the vacuum.
When you turn the vacuum on, its not loud at all! Infact, its way quieter then the Dirt Devil Royal upright variation. The only time the vacuum is loud to me, is when you take the powered floor tool off, and run it with the crevice tool on, then you get a lot of air suction noise. But when you run the powered floor tool, you hear nothing but a hum, and a little bit of motor noise and thats it. The suction on this vacuum is powerful, it has no problem sucking anything up within the hose size diameter of course. The power switch for the vacuum is on the opposite side of the cord retract button.
POWERED FLOOR TOOL: The powered floor tool was one of the main reasons why I bought this vacuum. I have cats, and I have shag carpeting, so the only thing that is going to clean a shag carpet out, is a motorized brush. The floor tool comes with a light on it so you can see your cleaning path. The motor, belt, and brush, are all contained within the floor tool. There is a manual brush height adjustment on the floor tool, up to 6 positions can be set. I find the default setting that came with the vacuum works great on shag carpeting, which is setting number #3.
The powered floor tool is able to literally pull up every spec of dirt, dust, rocks, and animal fur! When I look back at the cannister, I can see the cyclonic action moving the dirt around and around, in the transparent collector. So in my humble opinion, the performance balance between the suction power, and the motorized brush, does every bit as good, if not better, then the old 80's Hoover vac we used to have. The floor is left perfectly cleaned, with not a spec of dirt, dust, rocks, or animal hair to be found!
FILTERS: This unit uses a dual filtration system, some filters can be replaced, others cleaned. Inside the bag less collector are two filtering sections, a screen filter, and a foam filter. Both filters can be removed and washed using only water from the tap, dried out completely, and re-installed into the collector. Located in the left rear wheel of the cannister vac, is the HEPPA motor filter, this filter is responsible for saving your allergies, by filtering the exhausted air from the vacuum.
CONCLUSION: In my opinion, this is one of the best vacuums you can buy. The ultimate suction power means less of a chance of things getting stuck in the vac hose, and the more debri insured, that you pick up. The powered floor tool, allows you to effectively clean out a shag carpet, pull all the pet hair and dander out, and leave your house not only looking cleaner, but smelling cleaner as well, because of the HEPPA filtration. So far I haven't had any troubles with my vacuum, so I am going to have to highly recommend it. 5-STARS!
It is harder to store than an upright, but I find that if I set the base on its end and let the hose slide in among the coats, it still fits well into my tiny front closet. All together, I find the minor difficulties more than balanced by the power and flexibility of the machine, and it's *infinitely* easier to haul up the stairs than my old upright. The powered carpet-beater brush in the head was definitely the winning feature, for me. I had to empty the canister twice while doing the living room, which says mildly disgusting things about the carpet but very good things about the action and suction on this thing.
The suction is very good and the motor in the rug head gives an added assist. It really picks up well, isn't too noisy and has a cord that is pretty long considering it is a retractable cord. The rug attachment does have height adjustment, but the read out is very hard to see. The power control and cord retract buttons are in a convenient place. The canister rolls around easily.
What it doesn't have is a good connection between the hose and the metal wand. Getting these 2 things to separate is very difficult. I've tried silicone spray at the connection, it didn't make any difference.
The canister is a royal pain to empty. Make sure you have the canister deep into your trash can when you empty. Most times I have to end up putting my hand in there to pull the pet hair out. Not good. Decent machine but not an elegant design.
