Please allow me to take a moment to fan myself. . Once again, AJ Nuest has completely blown my mind and left me wanting more with Dirty Deeds, her new romantic suspense. It’s no secret I’m a huge AJ Nuest fan, and there’s a reason. Dirty Deeds is an exciting action/thriller/romance with spice more potent than the chocolate covered cherries her heroine, Eden Smith, uses to get revenge on and unsuspecting man. As the owner of a revenge-for-hire agency, Eden's smart, tech-savvy, and in control of her life at all times…until she meets sexy Chicago cop Kelly Riordan. Investigating a murder of one of Eden’s past customers, Kelly knocks her off-kilter. Eden isn’t sure what to do with this alpha-male, tough guy when he wants to protect her -- she’s always looked out for herself. Kelly is just enough alpha to make even us independent girls swoon. He's a homicide detective--smart, analytical, brooding--oh yeah, sexy--enough said.
AJ’s action-packed style of writing and her gift for character development keeps me on the edge of my seat, and Dirty Deeds was no exception. I read the book in an afternoon. I was enthralled with the plot line, and I just couldn't put it down (not to mention I was bound and determined to find out what that darn password was!)
My new fav, Dirty Deeds is reminescent of She’s Got Dibs, my other favorite AJ Nuest book. She takes a reader and plops them deep into her hero and heroine’s twisted and broken psyches, and you can’t help but root for them in the end. I love that with all of her alpha males, there’s an equally alpha female. And some of the greatest lines of her book come from her secondary characters, Mocha and Tanner. I laughed myself silly at Mocha’s over-the-top drag queen persona. You don’t know the password? Mocha always has a great comeback.
Bottom line: The concept of Dirty Deeds is pure genius…anonymous revenge for hire using old school tactics like using secret passwords and undercover beauties with personas that leak into their real lives…it’s Meg Gardiner meets Nelson DeMille mixed in with Jill Shalvis -- all favs of mine. I’m excited that the author is turning this into a series. I can’t wait to read the next one!
My favorite character is Mocha!!!! OMG she is awesome!!! I totally imagined Wesley Snipes when he was in that movie with Patrick Swayze - "To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar" LOL!!!
Could not put the book down! Highly recommend.
I received this book from the publisher Penguin Random House and Netgalley only for my honest review
4.5/5 Cross posting to My Reading Reality
Kelly Riordan is the detective who does good. He believes in justice and tries to do what is right no matter how hard it is. He is mired with some guilt over his last case that has him stumble a little when it comes to Eden but the attraction and chemistry has him overcome this. Kelly is just as headstrong as Eden and a protector. he sees her as someone who wants justice but goes about it in an unconventional way.He knows that she is just as much a victim in what is happening around her and feels she is in danger especially after what happens after their first meet. Overall a great guy and sexy as all getup.
Eden is strong, smart and sassy. I love her banter with kelly and how her personas protect her in many ways. She dons them so she can forget her past and do her job. Your heart will go out to her as you hear about her childhood and Malcolm. At first liked him but his reasons for taking in kids from the streets is just wrong man. SO wrong. He did good but for his own gain. But he was like a dad to Eden so you feel bad with his outcome.
The relationship between Eden and Kelly is entertaining and a battle of wills at times. Kelly wants to trust her and she him but her past holds her back. when she finally does is when we get so many reveals and honest moments. Watching Kelly show her trust and let her in swoony. Seeing them grow close was great. when she blindsided him it was disappointing to see but understandable. What surprised me is that he felt blindsided. He knew her and knew she wouldn’t sit back and let things go on without her helping. It’s her nature to help and protect. Also to get justice in entertaining ways like the artist man that was a hoot. this is one resourceful girl and one who needs to have some semblance of control so Kelly should have known that Eden would cook something up to be involved and not on the sidelines. That was a meh moment for me. Understandable but meh. Also Eden is smart so why didn’t she connect the dots sooner. That didn’t make sense either to me that she didn’t see this earlier not sure if it was denial or what but for a smart girl she didn’t have it going on with this one. Oh and the side characters like Eden’s coworkers (funny as get up) are awesome and loyal.
other than those two hiccups this was great. We get a story of a young sassy smart woman who gets justice for others in unconventional ways in danger and having those close to her die. Revenge is her business and the murders are just that. She is determined to go it alone but Kelly is dogged in his desire to protect and solve his case. So together after much reluctance on her part they explore their feelings and solve who is after Eden. We get fun moments like the artist, sad moments, heartbreaking moments, swoony moments (Kelly’s gift to Eden) and sexy as sin moments. Such a fun story that intrigues and entertains from beginning to end.
