Dirty Deeds is easily one of the most enjoyable crime novels I’ve read recently. It’s packed with gritty, believable characters, plot twists, and enough violence to make it feel wholly authentic without turning into a blood bath. This is gripping fare, and Rosamilia’s writing is truly fun to read.
I also didn’t find the ending as jarring as other readers seem to have. The story wrapped up fairly conclusively before the arrival of the hook for the sequel, and it didn’t make me feel that the narrative had concluded without a real ending.
This book has more than earned a five star rating, and I’ll definitely be picking up the sequel in the future!
It starts with an odd premise. This isn't your usual crime novel. I was drawn in right away, wondering where the story could go. Add in a protagonist who is an unlikely tough guy. Give our hero a funny and ironic voice and you're off on a fun adventure. The author nailed this character. I loved that voice in my head. For a thriller, I usually like lots of action (and there is that) but I preferred to listen in on the thoughts of James Gaffney as he navigated a complex world filled with really bad people. The main character is a fully fleshed out person and, in many ways, he's an ordinary guy. He just happens to deal with a criminal underworld.
I won't say much more except to address the ending. Most of the main story is resolved but the cliffhanger makes it clear there are more adventures to come. This is a series, not a stand alone, and I'm glad. Can't wait to read the next book!
The main character, whose real name is still unknown, is great. He is totally believable. He is flawed both physically and emotionally. The more I got to know about him as the book progressed, the more invested in his fate I became. Great job from the opening line of hooking the reader. Why would you care about a character who tells you in the first paragraph he kills children for money? Trust me, you will care about him. And you will root for him.
The action was a good combination of suspense shot through with frenzied action and relieved by wonderful humor.. The side characters were well developed also. I will be on the look out for the sequel. I rate Dirty Deeds a shiny five stars.
I received this book through the Kindle Scout program and I am so happy that I voted that this book be added to it!
