We meet Elizabeth at one of the lowest points in her life. With the support of her grandmother, she finishes high school and gets herself into college on a scholarship.
While she enjoys being in college, it is now her junior year and she keeps to herself outside of a small group of friends but uses sex on her terms and controls the situation.
It's in this vein of learning to enjoy her college experience that she meets Declan. A twin from London who is the ultimate bad boy. He fights in an underground club and has just bought a gym to train other fighters and is the exact opposite of what she thinks she wants, or is he?
The back and forth between Elizabeth and Declan is addictive to read. You can't help but root for them. I just saw that the next book is out with Dax and I'm excited to read it!
“He was exactly what I needed tonight, the complete opposite of Colby’s blond and preppy Ralph Lauren looks. Perhaps it was time to take my rules a step further, to prove myself I could be with whomever I wanted and keep control of the situation.”
Declan grows up in England, living with his twin brother Dax and their mother, while his father didn’t want to be a part of their lives. When his mother got very ill and died, Declan and Dax are shipped to the United States to live with a father who’d rather not have anything to do with them. Both Declan and Dax are smart boys who were expected to follow their father’s footsteps. But Declan’s interests lay elsewhere, he’s good at fighting and wants to make a full-time career out of it. While attending college, he’s fighting in an underground circuit, most of the time winning. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he doesn’t want to start something new, but meeting his awkward, beautiful neighbor/classmate changes everything.
“She fit the mold for the kind of girls I’d seen in my self-defense classes. Scared. Vulnerable. Hiding behind her pain. Elizabeth Bennet had been hurt in the past by someone, and whoever he was, I wanted to bury my fist in his face.”
From the moment Declan and Elizabeth are introduced to each other, they both feel a very strong attraction. But each has their own reasons for not wanting to get involved; Declan has just broken up with his girlfriend over the summer and wants to focus on his classes, but more importantly on the gym he just purchased. Elizabeth only ‘dates’ safe men, Declan is the complete opposite of what she considers safe. Declan knows what he wants and that’s Elizabeth – not just for one night or a fling, but for real love. Due to her past, Elizabeth has a hard time wrapping her head around the fact that her rules and believes are wrong, that a beautiful and dangerous man can be the one for her.
Reading the prologue made me feel so bad for Elizabeth. It is painful to read what was happening to her, but it also explained her way of thinking—how she became the young woman she is now. I understand her motives, but sometimes I wanted to shake her a little. Declan was the right man for her. Yes, he is good-looking, rich, popular, but he is still the right guy. I love to see that Elizabeth – with Declan’s unconditional love – finally understood her self-worth and embraced the future she could have with him. Besides the main characters, I really liked Blake and Shelley, Elizabeth’s best friends. I also hope that Dax, Declan’s twin brother, is getting his own story.
“You and me, we got this. I’m going to spend the rest of my life loving you. I’m going to give you whatever you want, Unicorn girl. I’m going to kiss you every single night. I’m going to f**k you and then make love to you. I’m going to give you kids. A home. Happiness. All of my heart.”
This is the first book I’ve read by Ilsa Madden-Mills, and it certainly won’t be the last, I really enjoyed the writing. I give this story 4.5 stars.
Declan and Elizabeth are two broken people who are drawn to each other.
Watching these two will send you on an emotional roller coaster ride. You will scream at your kindle. I know I did it a few times. Telling a certain someone to pull their head out of their butt and look at what's in front of them.
I am looking forward to another book in this series. I can't wait to read more about Dax!! I cannot wait to see what happens with him!
Declan is someone that you want as your real live boyfriend. Ilsa where can I find him? I know that Dax is going to be just as devastating to us as Declan is. All I can say is I can't get enough of these English men.
"Loving Declan was like the rain storms I loved to dance in. Crazy and unpredictable, sometimes turbulent, sometimes gentile."
The Brits are coming!!!!!! And I might just say I am loving this British Invasion of Declan and Dax Blay!!!!! Ilsa Madden-Mills if you are reading this review, can I just say how I much I freaking love you for writing this fab book. Dirty English was more than your typical romance of hot tattoo British bad boy meeting a young American lady and falling in love. This book was so much more than an ordinary college romance. Dirty English spoke volumes of love, forgiveness, second chances, redemption, hope, and new beginnings.
"I'm the guy who's going to take you up against this wall. I'm going to bury my c% in you and own your body and you're going to love it. But I'm not going to hurt you. Ever."
I have always been a Jane Austen fan and Pride and Prejudice has always been one of my favorite literary classics. As a romantic at heart, I have always wanted my version of Mr. Darcy. And in Dirty English, Ilsa has put a modern twist to a beloved literary classic. Well if I thought Mr. Darcy was a man to swoon for, then ladies Ilsa will have your knickers in a twist when she introduces us to Declan Blay. What's not to love about Declan Bay...he's hot, single, smart, sensitive, loves literary classics, and he's BRITISH!!!!!!! Oh yeah, he also has a hot twin brother named Dax. That's right TWO BRITISH MEN!!!!! So let the swooning begin!!!! And oh yeah, Declan's leading lady is named Elizabeth Bennett. Jane Austen gave her readers Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy and now Ilsa Madden-Mills has given us Elizabeth Bennett and Declan Blay.
"She was my queen and I wanted to be her king. I wanted to sit at the throne of her body and love her forever, but it wasn't just sex, although that had been over the f&%#@ing moon. No, with us it was about two broken people who looked deep into the eyes of the other person and just-meshed. Call it fate or destiny or just plain old karma, but whatever it was, the moment I watched her dance in the rain, my heart had known, only it had taken my head a while to catch up."
Right off the opening pages, I was emotionally hooked with Dirty English. Ilsa consumed me with such strong emotions for Elizabeth Bennett for what had happened to her in her senior year of high school. My heart ached and broke for her. Elizabeth learned the hard way that sometimes the people whom you thought you loved could have the power to destroy and break you. So fast forward to two years later, Elizabeth learned that the only way that she could control her life is to not let anyone have the power to destroy her emotionally, physically, and sexually. Elizabeth doesn't have many friends but she has two best friends that she allowed into her heart. Shelly and Blake are all aware of what had happened to Elizabeth and hopes that their friend can finally move on. And the first step in living life, they forced Elizabeth to attend her first college frat party where she meets not one hot Brit but two.
"And no matter what came our way, I was in this for real. If he wanted to use his fists, I'd stand in his corner and kiss him before he put his gloves on."
When Declan Blay first laid his eyes on Elizabeth Bennett, it was game over for him. He felt the instant connection to her. Her brokenness spoke to him and there was nothing he wanted to do but help heal and piece back the shattered pieces of her heart. Declan Blay did not see a broken woman but a woman who held his heart hostage. He saw a beautiful woman inside and out, who just needed to fight through her emotional demons. Declan and Elizabeth's relationship stole my heart. It gripped me emotionally on how Declan was able to heal Elizabeth's heart. I love a book that can make you FEEL. And let me just say, Dirty English was brimming with such passion, intensity, raw emotions, tangible bonds, and a palpable love story that will leave you yearning and swooning for more Declan Blay. Can a scarred fighter heal a broken woman? There is only one way to find out... go read Dirty English and I promise you that you will not regret it.
The writing and story-telling in Dirty English was well executed. Elizabeth's brokenness gripped my heart. I wanted to hug her and cheer her on as she learned to move on with her life. I have always been drawn to books with strong heroines and Ilsa Madden-Mills did an amazing job showcasing and highlighting a strong heroine, who has gone through hell and back. Elizabeth Bennett reminded readers that there is always hope, second chances, and new beginnings. Declan Blay may have been the fighter but Elizabeth was the true fighter in every sense of the word. She survived her demons. They say love hides behind every corner, and for Elizabeth Bennett love was literally next door. Dirty English was a great reminder that one should not be looking for someone who will solve all one's problems...but looking for someone who won't let you face them alone. So if you are looking for a book that will have you chanting THE BRITS ARE COMING!!!!! then I highly recommend you to read Dirty English.
