So I finally sat myself down & read Dirty Heart.( A series end is always bittersweet for me!)
Can I say yet again that I LOVE Mama Claudia? It was a rough last ride with Cole & I am embarrassed that I did not even think of ,let alone guess what it was that sent Ben postal until right before the end. I don’t know why, but that never even entered my mind! lol …but the truth was still as tragic & pointless,& soooo unnecessary! It still broke my heart, but thank you for affirming Rick & Coles love for each other🌞 The truth just highlighted just how broken & in the end bug nuts crazy Ben was😕…of course the whole shooting his partner & partners lover then offing himself was kind of a big ‘ol clue! ….& can I just say that Coles 1st partner totally takes the cake in crazy! I am sad that young Cole touched that! *shudders*
Tho I feel bad about Ben & his issues, I just can’t wrap my head around his answer to those issues or how he could say he loved Cole or anyone when love had nothing to do with what he chose to do!! Yes the crazy I know!
*Hugs* thank you so much for giving us Cole & all his crazy circumstances…omg the wedding was hysterical!😄 I hope we get peeks into their future😘
Ok I think I have waaay over used crazy today. Putting that away for now lol
If this book is indeed the capstone of the Cole McGinnis series, I for one will miss him. However, if reader demand compels Rhys Ford to revisit this story line she will have to come up with something other than dredging up murderous monsters from Cole’s past or adding new characters to the Cole McGinnis extended family. What that new story line might be would be a real challenge to Ms. Ford.
One of the most intense, fraught, and exquisitely drawn couples in all of modern gay romance, Cole McGinnis and Kim Jae-Min, the half-Japanese Angelino ex-cop and the dutiful, beautiful Korean photographer, are finally comfortable in their love for each other. It hasn’t been a smooth path for our boys, but all along the way there’s been Bobby, Claudia, Ichiro, Scarlet, Mike and Maddie to nurture them, support them, and dodge bullets with them.
In “Dirty Heart” various ghosts, canine and human, emerge from both Cole and Jae’s pasts, bringing with them bad memories and still further threats to their safety and happiness. I’ve always been a bit startled by the level of violence in these books, but by now it’s become almost a part of the inevitable bloody choreography of the narrative. In spite of the trust we’ve developed that our friends will survive, Ford keeps us on the edge of our seat, ever fearful that she’ll go all “Game of Thrones” on us.
Ford clearly loves these men (and their supporting cast) as much as we do. She manages to create an unexpected web of interwoven stories, springing a surprise on us in this last book that is both hair-raising and heartbreaking. The nightmare that began Cole’s journey to Jae comes lunging out of the deepest darkness in his soul. Ultimately, it seems, Cole and Jae will make it into the light together, or not at all.
So, now to "Dirty Heart" in particular. Cole and Jae Min are settling nicely in to domestic contentment, and no one has even shot at either of them for at least a couple of days. Unfortunately, that changes when a meeting in Koreatown goes seriously wrong and Cole is once again dodging bullets. It appears that Jeff Rollins, Cole's first partner and former lover, has surfaced, and is hunting Cole and those closest to him. He may also be involved with what happened to Ben, although Cole never knew Jeff and Ben knew each other. The mystery builds, along with lots of violence (a good thing), some steamy sex, a murder or two, and one hell of a surprise at the end. Ben did definitely have a reason for what he did, but it is not one that had ever occurred to me.
I have the rest of the series on audiobook, and can't wait to add Dirty Heart so I can just listen over and over and never have to live without Cole and Jae.
