Sky has written a great story, with acouple of moral lessons in the romantic, sexy love story, sprinkled with just the right smattering of BDSM and forgiveness!
I will be reading this again!
The premise is this: Christiana is a good person, a hard working person working at a routine office job when she meets the boss, the big boss. He flusters her and she's uncomfortable with it because as a devout Christian with an Amish background, she's not supposed to be flustered by a man unless she's married to him. Christiana has a mother recovering from a serious bout of pneumonia, with an extreme amount of medical bills to pay, so she desperately needs her job. That's why she accepts a new job offer from Xan, as his PA, to be conducted at his home. This is where warning bells started going off in her mind, and it's where she should have seriously thought about walking away. Then the first day he orders her to strip and put on some lingerie he bought her or she's fired. And that right there is where Dirty Promotion completely lost me and never got me back. Blackmail tropes are one thing, but sexual harassment?! Nope, not even can I go there, no matter how sexy and delicious the story (or the man) turns out to be.
The main reason I three starred this instead of going lower? Because it's as I said, sexy, and well written. Why I couldn't go higher? Because, as I said, Xan is the biggest douche, EVER, I wanted Christiana to hold onto her good Christian values a lot longer than she did, and because 4 stars means I like it, and I can't honestly say I like Dirty Promotion. Did it get to me? HELL YES. Will I remember it, as I remember most of what Sky Corgan writes (even if I hate a lot of her characters)? Yes, definitely yes. Do I like Xan? HELL NO! Do I hate Xan? HELLS to the YES!!!!! Do I like Christiana? Hmmm...I'm on the fence. I respect her for the life she lead and the kindness she showed and for being strong for the most part. Not sure about liking her, though.
I'm glad she finally grew a backbone toward the end, but then once again she caved with only one little proclamation and a cute little backstory from Xan. Sigh...I never once felt a strong connection between Christiana and Xan. Was it steamy? Sure, but a strong connection? No. I think she is entirely too naive for a man like Xan, and that she has no idea what real love is. And Xan...if the man loved her then why did he treat her so horribly? He never really gave a reasonable explanation for his douche-iness or for why he was so hot and cold (mostly cold) with her. Some vague explanation about him being an ass *** is simply not good enough I'm afraid. Ugh, Xan gives me the creeps and not once did he redeem himself in my eyes. He did in Christiana's eyes, though, and I guess that will have to be good enough for me.
Sky Corgan is certainly a storyteller. I can't say that I like a lot of her characters (in fact, most of them are pretty horrible in one way or another), but her writing is pretty unforgettable, and so is Dirty Promotion. Likable? Not really, not at all, in fact. But definitely unforgettable and entertaining.
