In this second installment to author Lisa Renee Jones’ Dirty Rich series, aspiring attorney, Lori Havens has had to put her career goals on hold in order to take care of her ailing mother. But when Lori crosses paths with a sexy stranger from out of town, what was supposed to be a one-night stand takes on an unexpected twist, when months later, her sexy stranger turns out to be her brand new boss.
Cole Brooks is a wealthy, successful attorney who finds himself completely enamored by the beguiling woman who left his bed surreptitiously the “morning after.” Armed with only her first name, Cole’s search for the disappearing Lori proves to be utterly fruitless. So, with a new partnership in the works and a move to a new city, Cole forces himself to relinquish the search, fully prepared to let go and move on. That is, until he looks out across a conference room and locks gazes with his brand new intern--Lori.
Dominant tendencies aside, Cole truly is a prince among men, in search of his elusive princess. But even after this prince is reunited with said princess, their fairy tale ending is still too far out of reach. For while Lori’s Cinderella story surely deserved a HEA, she was constantly getting in her own way towards achieving that goal. While I understood Lori’s need to succeed based solely on her own merits, her unrelenting stubbornness when it came to Cole quickly grew tiresome. Professionally, Cole never failed to treat Lori with the respect she deserved. And on a personal level, Cole was always affectionate, supportive and understanding. So Lori’s push and pull behavior became a source of frustration.
As for Cole, however, it didn’t take me long before I found myself falling head over heels in love with this sexy, dominant man. Not only is he everything a girl could want wrapped up in a deliciously sinful package, but Cole’s generosity of spirit and infinite patience sets him far above many other book boyfriends.
Together, Cole and Lori really heat up the pages! Right from the get go, their chemistry sizzled and then later sored. In keeping with her trademark style, Lisa Renee Jones successfully delivers another steamy hot story with plenty of heart. So, minor frustrations aside, I found “Dirty Rich Cinderella Story to be an enjoyable story overall.
Lori, the heroine, is deeply conflicted as a result of personal traumas and disappointments, and as a result, she gets in her own way throughout the story. She's quick to judge and even quicker to leap to conclusions - most of which are flawed. She wants Cole, but can’t seem to fully commit for at least 80% of the book, and it's often frustrating (but necessary to the plot). Lori is smart, driven, and determined, but also over-reactive and stubborn. In Lori’s world, there is only black and white, no shades of gray. The disappointments of life experience influence her decisions and make her resistant to meet Cole halfway - that’s her biggest challenge as she struggles with her attachment to, and need for, Cole - the Prince Charming in her Cinderella story.
Cole and Lori are powerful as a couple, personally and professionally - their desire for each other is so hot that sparks fly off the page even before the sexy times begin. They are as intense and passionate as can be. They're intellectual and sexual equals, and their push-pull power dynamic is fully expressed in the bedroom...and everywhere else.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and was delighted to see a few Walker Security favorites in the mix. Reece, Cat, Adam, and Rick always bring an element of excitement to the plot; their involvement in the story feels comforting and familiar, but also adds a little humor when it's needed most.
The only thing missing for me in this delightfully seductive story was the element of risk and suspense that I crave in Lisa’s stories. I kept waiting for something to go horribly wrong - something that would test their relationship in a dramatic way. I won't say I was disappointed - but I’m an adrenaline junkie and love a romantic suspense angle that builds to a dramatic conclusion (see my previous comments about Sean and the Dirty Money series!).
I may add more to this review as I give it a little more thought, but for now, just trust me, buy it or borrow it, and read it. This fairy tale is a keeper - a must for romantics everywhere.
Cinderella runs into her Prince Charming, literally. Both are stunned by the encounter but Lori Havens rebuffs anything further from Cole Brooks. But fate has more in store for when they both show up at the same bar. Assumptions and assessments are made about each other and Lori agrees to a one-night stand because she knows she will never see him again.Cole and Lori's first night together is so erotically charged it practically arcs off the page because of the electricity between them.
Winning a prestigious scholarship finally allows Lori to re-enter law school and complete her degree AND take care of her financial obligations. Going to work for Reese Summer and his new partner is a dream come true. But, she's thrown for a loop when she discovers that the new partner, Cole, is her one night stand and the man she walked away from. Thus begins a personal and professional roller coaster ride of emotional highs and lows. His trust in her abilities is gratifying and she learns from him daily. Her input on several high profile cases is a tipping point into winning.
They both want and need each other but going all in is terrifyingly real. His need to take care of her and her need not to need him. When he does things to make her life easier and pave the way, she needs to realize he's offering help not a handout. Trusting him finally removes the last wall between them. He owns her just as she owns him.
