Review

"Books just don't come any better than this. Brent Wolfingbarger has penned a political thriller that puts him in league with the big boys." - Chapters&Chats.com

"It's a really well-written book, with some of the snappiest dialogue I've read in a long time. . . Mr. Wolfingbarger manages to include some real texture to his characters, which adds a level of emotional drama to an already interesting story." - Rose McClelland @ The Unbound Underground

"The author has delicately, and very adeptly, managed to balance a political thriller with some romance, avarice and a bit of comedy. . . It was a relishing read. . ." - IndianBookReviews.com

"THE DIRTY SECRET was fantastically written, halfway through it had me at a point that I just couldn't stop thinking about it...Wolfingbarger has created a thriller that kept me engrossed and intellectually stimulated..." - StoryWings.com

"This book has it all, politics, intrigue, murder, adultery, bribery, blackmail, love. . .The whole plot of this story is woven together so well, the further the story goes the deeper and deeper these manipulations go." - Shelly Greninger @ {Dive} Under The Covers

I'm going to say 5 Stars out of 5: Maybe teen audiences won't get some of the political subtext (though I've known some pretty sharp teenagers) but I really can't think of much to criticize about this book. Great characters, great plot, great focus and an interesting treatment of politics, some really enjoyable dialogue and well-executed action. It's a complex book without being overly complicated, and people looking for a read with some interesting ideas, some interesting characters, or a nice fast-paced plot that doesn't feel like something you've already read a handful of times, this is a great choice. Mr. Wolfingbarger seems way more interested in showing the dimensions of political life instead of touting or defending any one perspective, and if there's a cynicism to the portrayal of the American political system, it's at least a cynicism that most people will probably relate to.

The Dirty Secret

Books just don't come any better than this. Brent Wolfingbarger has penned a political thriller that puts him in league with the big boys.

Brent has an extensive background as a lawyer. Currently a Prosecutor in Washington D.C, he has worked on cases involving malpractice, computer-related crimes and rallied for the right of elderly and disabled victims of violent crimes; often working with task forces involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Attorney's Office. This father of two uses his experience as a Prosecutor in writing an honest look inside the political arena.

The Dirty Secret takes the reader into the back-room of the political process involved in a presidential election. In the opening of the book the reader becomes privy to a conspiracy designed to keep a criminal from extradition by means of rigging the election. What ensues is a tug of war between Democrats and Republicans to garner enough votes and win the presidency.

Now I admit I know nothing, seriously nothing, about politics. When I started the book I was instantly captured with the first chapter, which laid the groundwork for the story. But when I hit chapter two, and the legalities of the electoral process began, I was worried I would be lost, and truly that wasn't the case. Brent Wolfingbarger lays everything out in a combination of legal and layman terms that had me wanting to know more, and made the story that much more interesting.

This book has so many elements of twists, turns and surprise! I'm not much of a person for politics or law, but this book was easy to follow and made sense to me. The political an legal jargon was used in ways that made it understandable so as to comprehend the different things being played out in the book. I like how the characters started off independent and then converged on a single scheme. This book has everything, from conspiracy to love, and from scandal to murder; just when you think you know what's going to happen, you're taken to a fork in the road.

"For some reason, one of Benjamin Franklin's most famous saying invaded his consciousness: 'Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead.'" (kindle loc. 505)

Well, let me start by saying that this book in way out of the genre that I usually hold to when purchasing and reading new books. So, I'll have to say that I'm extremely impressed by this book and it has actually convinced me to purchase more novels within this type of genre.

The Dirty Secret is a great novel that really grabs your attention from the get-go and really maintains that grip throughout its entirety. I love the characters and their development throughout the process of the main plot line. It made for some interesting character conversations and stories, as well as some interesting, and sometimes funny scenes late in the book.

One thing that hits you right off the bat is the sexuality that maintains a key role in one of the main character's story line. It's rather blunt and "in your face," so to speak, which I like rather than just dancing around the idea and being subtle about it like most authors are. Mr. Wolfingbarger makes no bones about the concepts of the sexual existence in politics; as we have seen as of late in the political realm that we are used to seeing exploded by the media. It truly does give you the perspective of a scandalous relationship from both sides of the situation and allows the reader to see just what can be gained from being involved in such a scenario.

Humor and love are two other key components showcased in this particular novel. Again, two main characters find themselves meeting and working together again after a once failed love attempt. Again, this makes for great character conversation and plot development. The humorous aspects are held within my personally favorite character Sheriff Vaughn of Pleasants County. While being the strong silent type, he offers up a true comic relief to the serious action taking place at times.
