Already it has been changing my attitude on discipleship and my role in the local church.
I've been involved in discipling men for about forty years now. I have also been the beneficiary of being discipled. I've certainly read a number of discipleship books...plenty for a lifetime.
So when Zondervan sent me a (unsolicited) copy of The Disciple Maker's Handbook I came pretty close to setting it aside. I decided to give it a quick perusal first. I'm glad I did. The time reading this "handbook" was time well spent.
Harrington and Patrick do a terrific job of both offering practical instruction while peppering the book with thoughtful insights on discipleship. This is an accessible book that novices to ministries of discipleship will find most helpful. This kind of accessibility many times means something leans towards the superficial, but thankfully it is not the case with this book.
One of the many strengths of this book are the various exhortations and insights on being intentional when it comes to discipleship ministries.
Chapter 1 God does his most exquisite work in small ways!
Chapter 2 People who make the biggest difference in our lives are not famous.
Chapter 3 People don't float into spiritual maturity.
Chapter 4 Faith grows, deepens, and flourishes in community with believers. It withers in isolation.
Chapter 5 In Jesus, we learn how God, in his grace, shows us new sins to confess. (This chapter was my favorite!)
Chapter 6 The apostle Paul was discerning and careful of the way he invested himself.
Chapter 7 While learning scriptures can be good and helpful...the focus of discipleship is knowing Jesus and trusting him.
Chapter 8 We do not need to prove to others that they are sinners, the Spirit will used God's word to do that.
Chapter 9 Everyone has a distinct life story and journey with God.
Chapter 10 Jesus is not a character in our little stories. We're characters in his grand story!
This book will definitely provide assessment, direction, and encouragement. It is not just a read, it will force you to respond!!
If going and making disciple-makers is the core mission of the people of God here on earth, then books like this are incredibly helpful in showing some practical possibilities for what this looks like in our world today.
*PS I'd also recommend Harrington's co-authored book, Discipleship That Fits, which gives a fabulous overview of the different ways God disciples us (and calls us to disciple others) in 5 distinct sizes of gathering. Discipleship That Fits: The Five Kinds of Relationships God Uses to Help Us Grow
