Editorial Reviews

It seems odd that the four-piece Wax Idols reside in Oakland, California. Especially considering the fact that the band's sophomore LP, ''Discipline & Desire,'' out March 26th on Slumberland Records, embodies a dark, full, twisted sound: something that feels more appropriate to the foggy, damp British climate than that of sunny California. But that's Wax Idols -- zigging where other might zag, and always going their own way. Compared to Wax Idols' debut LP, ''No Future'' (a raw, hook-heavy punk effort written and recorded primarily by Fortune in 2010/2011 and released on Chicago's Hozac Records), ''Discipline & Desire'' is more a group effort as the band -- Jen Mundy (rhythm guitar/vocals), Amy Rosenoff (bass) and Keven Tecon (drums) -- contributed to the recording and writing process. Fortune dedicated herself to this record for over a year and the band were right there with her, playing with pattern, melody and stretching themselves beyond the comfort of unassuming hooks and into a darker, new wave territory. ''Discipline & Desire'' was produced and engineered by Monte Vallier (of Half Church and Swell) and co-produced by Fortune. Mark Burgess (of the British outfit The Chameleons) worked alongside Wax Idols & Vallier as an extra pair of ears and even played bass on the album closer, ''Stay In.'' Together they've crafted an album that's sleek and focused without being slick, and dark and intense without being at all humorless. ''Discipline & Desire'' builds on Fortune s debut full length effort in almost every way, rounding out as a far more complete record. The melodies are stronger, the vocals echoed and haunting, and the playing is at an unflagging level of intensity. First single ''Sound of a Void'' is a storming, full-throated late night anthem, while ''Dethrone'' and ''When It Happens'' shimmer and throb, perfect examples of Wax Idols' unique take on pop. Slower numbers like ''Scent Of Love'' and ''Elegua'' mesmerize and entrance, and the feedback-laced ''AD RE:IAN'' is nothing short of a masterpiece, punctuated by bursts of special guest Kristin Dylan Edrich's noise viola. Album closer ''Stay In'' wraps up the album perfectly -- a mid-tempo melodic gem with a killer bassline and an uncanny balance of melody and atmosphere. This is an inventive, brilliant record which solidifies the fact that Fortune is one of the best songwriters hiding in the shadows of the other California, where the sun doesn't always shine. But, judging by this fantastic album, she and her Wax Idols won t be hiding for long.

This is a murky, wandering mess of an album. Very disappointing. I think she wears her influences on her sleeve a bit too much here, in that nothing here sounds original (UNLIKE the first Wax Idols album, which was amazing!). She's trying so hard to get in on that Siouxsie/Joy Division sound, but it just doesn't work. I also question the producers' motive in allowing such bad song structure. These songs are not memorable or pleasing to my ears. I read all the lyrics, listened multiple times, trying to force myself to like it, but it will never happen.

Aside from my biased answer of simply saying this is an amazing album, the following contents are this: the cd itself, the case, and the lyrics hidden within the case.

Wax Idols have matured from the puerile, characterless punk rock of their debut, to a kind of post punk-inspired sound that's far artsier, moodier, darker and just plain better. But they've still got some kinks to work out.

The songs strike a balance between semi-gothy post punk and more pop-oriented new wave. One thing's for sure - they know how to craft a good hook and a gripping chord progression, as evidenced by the melodic yet still propulsive When It Happens and Dethrone, two of the album's best tracks. Stare Back builds a dense, angsty head of steam and made me wonder why Savages were getting all the attention - this has that infectious energy and the dense wall-of-guitars sound, but also a keen sense of melody that a lot of today's post punk-inspired bands lack. Sound Of A Void reminds me a little of Wire with its manic, off-kilter vibe and chorused oddball guitar melody, while Scent of Love takes it down a few notches for a brooding, Banshees-esque brand of melancholy.

Siouxsie comparisons are certainly in order, but I honestly don't think Wax Idols are being overly derivative, as there are too many other influences and stylistic reference points here to compete with. I can hear shades of Viva-era Xmal Deutschland, a hint of Bauhaus, bits of Promise-era Gene Loves Jezebel, but also a dash of early Romeo Void when Wax Idols are in a more accessible mood. Importantly, they also tend to just sound like themselves!

While I wish they would work on getting the songwriting more consistent (this album does have its share of throwaways), one of my biggest gripes is the overall sound. The guitars are like thin squalls of plastic, while the drums have a gated reverb sound that's also a bit plastic-y.

Wax Idols are doing a great job of bringing back the old darkwave/deathrock sound. I really enjoy this record. You will too if you miss that old sound.

'discipline and desire' by wax idols is basically siouxsie and the banshees on some mild speed. it is so unbelievably great and such a departure from thekiddie girl punkshlosh that was 'no future'. it's playing as i type this!!! standouts include 'stare back', 'formulae' and the anti-god, anti everything 'when it happens'. PiCK THIS UP ON VINYL FROM slumberlandrecords.com. whew, well done ladies.
